Brooklyn Knife Co.

Here's one I picked up at an estate auction in almost too good to be true condition. I've been able to find almost no information about Brooklyn Knife Co., other than "1890-1920" in Goins. Any information about Brooklyn Knife Co. would be most appreciated, as would general observations about its age and authenticity. Thanks.

The line under the “o” in “Co” suggests, but does not guarantee, German manufacture.

Nice catch! I didn't see that line, and wouldn't have know its implications if I had. The observation brings up some questions.

Does the knife "look" like it was German made, if such an assessment could be made from looks alone?

After a certain date, weren't imported knives supposed to be stamped with the country of origin? Could it be assumed this knife was manufactured before that date? Could it have been assembled here using a German blade?

Is there any info about Brooklyn Knife Co? Maybe they were an import firm? I've found nothing other than the short mention in Goins.

As I stated, that line does not guarantee German manufacture.

I have Robeson knives with similar stamps and no country of origin. It is known that prior to the passage of the 1891 tariffs, Millard Robeson was importing his knives from England and Germany, so I assume the knives I have are pre-1891.

It is also known that some German made, post 1891 knives had the word GERMANY inked onto the backs of the master blades and could be easily removed by their sellers.

I really have no idea what a German made knife should look like, so I’m no help on that one.

And I had never heard of Brooklyn Knife prior to your post.

Lama: Houston Price's book lists the BROOKLYN KNIFE CO., N.Y. but no info. That usually means they heard of it but have no documentation. Hope to see you at the Berlin show. J.O'.
