Knife Information Books

Hey all,

Am looking to buy a book to identify/value/find out information on my knives. They're all largely historical/military/old/antiquey knives.

Any suggestions as to what to buy?

I was recommended Bernard Levine's guide: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Levines-Guide-K ... 387&sr=8-5

But it's like £120 new! (No idea how much that is in dollars sorry! haha.. about $170 ish)

Is it worth it? Would I find it cheaper anywhere?

Are there any other books you can suggest?

George, One book will not give you all the information you want, and I think that one is far too expensive. Levine's 5th edition, IIRC, was put out by the publisher, and not by Bernie Levine. For that price you should get an original 4th edition, and for less yet, a 3rd.

A good choice for a current first book may be Blade's Guide to Knives & Their Values.

Remember that any of these will have mostly American knives.

Book rate to the UK is not that expensive.

Hi George. For Sheffield knives I recommend the Sheffield Knife Book by Tweedale and for British Military Knives Ron Flook' book British and Commonwealth Military Knives. Neither gives price info but great sources of history, information and photos. s-k

Hello George...The book that I most often refer to is 'the Standard Collectors Guide, Fifth Edition, by Roy Ritchie and Ron Stewart. I bought mine through Smokey Mountain Knife Works. It was $16.95 + shipping, that was about as much as the price of the book. Hope this helps.

You're from England I see! Where did you get the tweedale book from? I've looked on Amazon and its £186! How on earth does a book cost THAT much money? Haha. And between £86-£206 on Abebooks!

Can't find it on Waterstones at all.

They better be good for money like that!

Hi George, I paid about £30 a few year ago. It may be out of print now. Those are ridiculous prices. Look for a second hand one. I'll keep my eyes open for you. s-k
