Can Anyone Tell Me Why This Isn't a First Generation

Post by Hukk »

I saw this listing from Bill Swan (Dusty Duck) ::doh:: and even wrote him a note. If you have been looking at our Bulldog Polls there are several reasons why this knife is not a first generation.

Can anyone start a list? It could get rather long on why this is not a first generation.

Let me take a shot here...

It's not a First Generation because.....he says it IS!! ::td::

At least he'll include a 3rd or 4th Generation BOX with the knife. Whatever.

Considering the source, yeah that could work, not one of the reasons, but I like it! ::tu::

ok, i can't find any 4" trappers.

i believe the surgical instrument stamp was first used in the 90s.

i think it is a "found" parts knife.

thats all i can see but this is school, ain't it?

Just because he says it's a 4 inch trapper does not make it a 4 inch trapper. This seller has given us plenty of fodder in which to amuse ourselves. ::nod::

right, he's not often correct in hid descriptions. i based my judgement on the 3 7/8" trapper with that etch and shield.

was anything i said correct? am i on the scent?

Hukk, This is a good one. Thanks for letting him know. We will see if he corrects it. Here is why I think it is not 1st generation.
1. The greenbone on the handles was only put on 2nd and 3rd generation knives. Ist generation greenbone is much smoother.
2. Surgical steel was not used on bulldog knives until 1993 (3rd generation) A similar # of knives were made in 1993 in carbon steel. They are dated 1993.
THere are other reasons that would eliminate it too if it is the frame I think it is. I believe it is BD#1076 which is a 4 and one eighth inch trapper. (3rd generation made in 1993) :?

What was the exact year they used surgical inst. stamp, then the scent will be easier to follow.

Surgical steel was 1st used on folding knives in 1993. It may have been used some in 1994&95 but if a bulldog pocket knife blade is marked surgical inst. you know it is 3rd generation made  during those 3 years. ::nod::

Ok I'll take a shot or two...

Wrong etching for a 1st Gen greenbone and how about the blade configuration...

1993,1994,1995, so it has 3rd generation blades. but the etch is confusing, pitbull/trade mark or pitbull in the descriptions of parkers guide.

is it the 1993 4 1/8" trapper with clip and skinning blades? #bkc1076?

without knowing which frame length it actually is, i'm not knowledgable enough to be more certain.

I believe you are exactly right on the # 1076. The etch is pit bulls trade mark. I think it is just an abbreviation in the book. The pit bull terrier etch was only put on a few select knives such as bulldog #49 and a few others.
If it is the frame you and I think it is it should not have an acorn shield or greenbone handles of any kind in a 1st generation knife. ::tu::

Hi Johnnie, you are correct as is olderdogs. The etch is correct, I think, but this knife has just about every thing we had covered previosly in other Bulldog polls. Here is something that will help. If it were a third generation 3 7/8" what would the handle shape be, if 4 1/8" it would be a straight frame. :) There is other stuff.

I like Bill's (El Lobo's) answer and it is TRUE, but not exactly what we are looking for on this knife.

3 7/8 was a dogleg.
Well, this is a 4 1/8 inch straight frame trapper, they did not make them in the First Generation with Greenbone, they did make a greenbone dog-leg in the first generation. Go back to the other polls, the canoe, there are 2 things you can plainly see. When you spot them, it will be an oh yeah moment. It is BKC 1076.
Hint: They have been discussed before. ::nod::

So, we know that this knife can not be a first generation because:
1. Third Generation style Greenbone jigging.
2. Surgical Inst. Steel was not used until the third generation.
3. Greenbone was not offered on any 4 1/8 inch trappers.
4. There should not be an acorn shield.
5. 4 1/8 inch trappers did not have this etch in first generation.
Seems as if I left something out, feel free to add to this if ther is something else.

thanks darrell, these polls have solidified the need to study and know many facts regarding the generation of bulldogs. this of course will carry over to whatever brand you are considering. thanks also to everybody else for their replys. i've learned a lot from all of you.
keep up the good work and maybe some of the other brand collectors will share their knowledge of their favorite knives. i'm looking forward to school more now than i did when i was younger.
