Tidioute-Union Cutlery

Post by David M »

How does this look? I am a beginner on old knives. To me the main blade doesn't look right and as seller states looks like handle has been replaced.http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Union-Cutle ... 1|294%3A50

It looks like an old knife with an awful lot of wear. One of the handles (probably the back) has been replaced. The knife has been apart (just look at the main pin) The blades have been heavily sharpened and reshaped (look at how the nail nick almost runs off the blade on the master).

That's the bad stuff, but at least the seller lets you see the problems and doesn't try to cover them up. The knife may well be mostly original, but it's collector value is severely diminished.

Yes,it is what it is,with a fairly rare tang stamp, in a desirable pattern.

I like older knives; but this one dosen't do much to excite me. ::td:: That's one thing about eBay; a better example will always come along.

Forgot to mention the pins holding the handles on. Look at the difference between the top pin on the mark side and the bottom pin on the same side (and all of them on the pile side). Believe me, those huge pins aren't original. The pin crack on the mark side might have been caused by the addition of that big pin at the bottom.
