I think that "character" has been there awhile, QS. Maybe since it was dyed? There is some chipping tho.

I will Iman.I have an old 8ot with worn scales that has saw cut worn off it that looks like that I gave to my oldest Grandson for gutting deer.

OK it just comes across odd,cause they are fine knives.I don't buy them cause I can get satisfaction for a modern knife thru Benchmade ,Spydico for high end,where Kershaw and Buck modern one hand knives more than satisfied my needs as I am a user more than a collector..

Not odd to me, I would argue that Spyderco and Benchmade can be quite expensive. Pro Tech is no different.
