I have its brotha from anotha motha. Stamped C. Platts & Sons, Gowanda, NY, inked "GERMANY" on the pile side of the main blade. Could never get a definitive answer as to whether this pattern was traditionally made or not. Shaped like a bowling pin if you ask me.

When you see those oversized tangs on the secondary blades,there's a good chance it's Olbertz made.

You will see those (of several different old brands) on ebay occasionally. Made by Olbertz for Parker, ink stamped “Germany” on the pile side of the master blade. On many the ink has been removed and the seller listing it as an old knife. Some say Parker had them made with ink stamps just for that purpose. I’ve also read that Parker did not own the rights to use many of the brand names and was forced to cease making them, but by then a whole bunch were already made and in circulation.

The stamp on the OP knife is STANDARD KNIFE CO. over LITTLE VALLEY N.Y. Unless one of the buyers took them there, none of them ever saw the “City of Knives”.

Actually the OP knife says Little Valley without the NY. Perhaps it was made in Little Valley, Germany. (LOL) Ken, Little Valley, NY is the "village of knives", there is not or ever was a city there, it is a small village. Great area to visit should you ever get the chance.

Thanks for the clarifications Gene. I’ve been to Little Valley a few years ago. Stopped there on the way from Bradford, PA to Cooperstown, NY. Wish I’d had a “cutlery history map” or something as I couldn’t find much there and the locals I spoke with didn’t know anything. Much the same as when I visited the Hudson River valley around Walden. Sadly no one I spoke with there knew anything of the area’s cutlery history either. I did find the Wawarsing Knife Museum but it wasn’t open when I was there (it was after Labor Day).

Ken:: Waldens tighter than a you no what when the subjects cutlery .Even residence having yard sales no better than to sell a pocket knife which could lead to a disgustion lol . I honestly dont feel the town has ever recovered from the loss of industry in the area . Joe

Gee Ken, so sorry you did not have a better historic trip to LV and Walden! When you were there the Cattaraugus factory was probably still standing, it burned down about five years ago, now a pile of bricks. Brad Lockwood petitioned the state and there are now historical markers at Job Case's house which was also the site of one of the Case Bros factories and by the Catt factory. Had you asked at the library you could have probably gotten directions to the Catt factory and WR and Job's houses. Not a whole lot left in Walden, the Schrade factory is still standing but only a couple remains of walls by the river are all that remain of the NYK factory and the others are all completely gone. The guys at Warwasing will sometimes open up if asked off season in the spring and fall but not in winter. I disagree with Kleen Cut al little, there is an antique shop there that sells guns and knives including knives made in Walden. Like most old cutlery towns most of their products were sold off many miles from the factory and there are not a lot to be found in the towns of origin. I have scored some beautiful Pressbutton and NYK knives at auctions near Walden over the years but those seem to happen a lot less often these days. It has amazed me that Little Valley calls itself the village of knives when at one time Walden produced many more knives then Little Valley ever did.

Gene there's nothing left of the old Schrade factory in Walden. There's a park known as Wooster Grove there now. What people sometimes depict as the old Schrade Ruins on the Wallkill River is actually what's left of the old Borden Condensed Milk plant. Unlike NYK and Walden Knife Co, the Schrade plant wasn't situated on the Wallkill since by then water power wasn't necessary. They were actually right near the Tin Brook on the other (East) side of town.
