Coutellerie du Barry
Just received my first Laguiole from Coutellerie du Barry. I'm not a knife reviewer but I'll do what I can. The first thing that gets me interested in a knife is its looks. This does not disappoint in any way. The handles are called black pine cone but i don't know what they actually are. It measures at 4" closed and the stamped blade is quite attractive. It's much thicker than I thought but feels good in the hand. It opens and closes with a smooth but hard pull of about 7-8. It exudes quality. I thought all Laguioles had a shepherd 's cross but if not that was my false impression. It arrived with a soft black leather slip. Sort of like a pair of driving gloves. Along with a business card and a card of photos a nice pen was included. Overall an impression of people that care about their product and how they appear. I'd have to rate it a 9.5 because after all I have to believe there's still a 10 out there.
Anyone looking at French cutlery would be very well satisfied.

Some of the best knives on the market. French knives are diverse and typically of good quality, and the Laguiole is only one example.
From Opinels to traditional and modern customs, French knives are unquestionably the best in terms of design and elegance in my opinion.

How thin is the blade just above the edge ?
And how sharp is the edge ?
I have owned 3 Laguiole knives all purchased from Cutlery stores in France when i was there in 1993. Very attractive knives but the blades were not thinly ground and the edges were not particularly sharp.

I'd say they're pine cone...and resin. Google led me to this page, which had the following information:
It's an absolutely stunning knife. Congratulations on that beauty! To make the handle, natural pinecones are cast in resin and then cut into scales to fit onto a knife blade.

Re: Coutellerie du Barry
Very nice knife!! Du Barry makes Laguliole knives in the mid to upper mid range, very decent quality and fit and finish....this handle on yours is actually a pine cone dipped in liquid plastic resin and then cut and shaped....interesting to say the least. The shepherds cross is a legend and not all Laguiole have it,,,,the story goes that shepherds stuck their knife in a piece of bread so they could see the cross and pray....that is a well managed tourist gimmick and never really happened, but sold real well...loljoeradza wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 1:37 am Just received my first Laguiole from Coutellerie du Barry. Also most Laguiole knives are made in Thiers and not in the city of Laguiole!! Unfortunately, everybody under the sun was calling their knives Laguiole because the name was not protected....therefore be aware of some BS knives from India and China these days. The French cuttlery association now has arranged that All Laguiole made in France are marked as such,,,that helps a bit.....
Most all French Laguioles have a Swedish made sandwich steel which is 90 % stainless and of very decent quality!!
I owe several French knives, some Laguiole and some more French regional knife patterns....my favorite and mostly known as one of the best French Coutelleries is Fontenille Pataud!! Their knives are fantastic!!!
There is a bunch of good reads on Laguiole cuttlery and knives out there, very interesting history too!!!
Thanks for sharing your knife!!
