Ike, you have created a spectacular assortment of beautiful species. The Kingbird was always a favorite of mine. They were always so feisty, going after crows, hawks, whatever; the Prothonotary Warbler which played a decisive role in sending the spy Alger Hiss to jail; the Dickcissel which I never saw in person. A marvelous array Ike.

Thank you, Garry, I appreciate your comments. I gotta admit that I was totally ignorant of that Alger Hiss/Prothonotary connection. I did a quick search and read about it, very interesting!
In regards to the Dickcissel, they are very common in my area and I would think you should have them also. They prefer open grasslands. I know that you have posted pics of a neighbor's cattle before, I would think some should be hanging out in your vicinity around that pasture land. Do a google search for "Dickcissel song", and listen, I'm sure you would have heard it. Look for them on fenceposts or power lines. They aren't found east of Kentucky but are throughout the state, according to the range map.

Put out my humming bird feeder yesterday and saw one this morning but I was too slow to catch a picture. I'll need to stand at the door and wait for them!

Sitting on my back porch this afternoon I saw a few birds in and over the garden.

Very unusual for me, I saw a flock of about a dozen Nighthawks flying north. They did not slow down for a photo.

Great pics Mel. I have one time seen a Mississippi Kite here in Texas. Magnificent bird. The red bellied woodpecker on the other hand, we have several in our neighborhood.

Thanks, fellows! Dogleg - I would have figured Mississippi Kites would be more common in Texas.

Here are a couple of more photos. First one is a House Finch from this afternoon. She was eating Mulberries.

Second is another Nighthawk, right at dusk. The Nighthawks are like Chimney Swifts: very fast and erratic in flight.

Those are awesome pics I rarely see RB Grosbeak and Baltimore Orioles, usually only during migration. I will see an Orchard Oriole on occasion, handsome enough, but not nearly as flashy as a Baltimore.

Very nice shots, Mel! The territory for Kites extends up near me, that slender finger along the Mississippi if you look at a range map. I have seen a few over the years if I am around the river.
Nighthawks...........I will sometimes wait out in the parking lot while my wife shops at one of the big box stores, and I am entertained by Nighthawks feeding around the lights of the parking lot, during summer evenings of course.
