You don't have to use your imagination. Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm JerryD and I'm not a Barlow fan. I don't go around poo-poo'in them and I don't bad mouth them and I do own a few of them (a very few) but all that said, please allow me to say, I'm not a fan of the Barlow pattern. To each his own.
I’m with Jerry, I have 6 or 7 of them, I even made myself carry a case xx 1978 for a few days… with the knife open it feels to short in my hand it’s not the knifes fault just don’t feel good to me…

QTCut5 wrote: Fri Apr 15, 2022 10:03 pm Not my usual choice of knives, but I bought one a while ago because I was attracted to the blade geometry and configuration. After I got it in hand, however, it was less attractive; I didn't like the size, the Delrin handle and the general "cheap" feel of it, so I sent it off in the POS exchange (sorry, knifegnome). But, then, for some reason I couldn't stop thinking about how much I liked the blades, so I contacted the seller and asked if he had any more. As luck would have it, he did, and I got another one. Still don't care too much for the size, the handle or the cheap feel, but something about the blades really speaks to me despite all of that, so into the collection it goes. ::facepalm::
I totally hear ya ~Q~! ::tu:: I had 1 of very very few that when viewed on the site looked great to me in every way, but as soon as I had it in my hand I immediately knew it was goin' in the "Some other time" drawer! But, somewhere between the living room and the S.O.T. drawer it flipped over in my palm and found a comforting groove for both of us and has since become a favorite, cuz I think I'm still just under the limit for number of favorites I can have! LOL! So, I get it bud, once something about a knife grabs me and I decide I want that one in my collection, warts n' all, then all the perceived defects seem to vanish and I start clicking! Now that I stop and think about it, there's perhaps 15%, perhaps more to others, in my collection that I'd consider as ugly ducklings, but I can pick-up and handle any one of them and immediately see their attributes, certainly long before seeing their defects, both character and visually. I love ALL my knives! 8) EDIT: I forgot to mention that the 2 blades on your knife are definitely it's best feature, I'd love seein' them on a favorite frame of yours, and remember, this is coming from a 1-blade guy! 8)

Honestly I started out being a little cold on Barlows, but they grew on me for reasons I can’t explain.

I would be as well, PB! Those Barlow s are eye candy of the best kind!! ::nod:: ::tu::

For me, after much lusting I pulled in a Schrade Heritage Barlow. I’m not disappointed! ::ds:: This thing is a poor mans GEC! Nice crisp etch, and the fit and finish are phenomenal! ::woot:: ::woot:: ::groove::
I couldn’t agree more that these are a poor mans GEC, these Schrade Barlows are made very well. I can’t explain why so many that are for sale are called seconds, I’ve seen a lot of the labeled that way. I wonder if Eric knows?
I didn’t like Barlows to start with but now it’s the pattern I have the most of in my collection. They do grow on you.

I have a lot of knives that I didn't know at the time why I got them other than because, like most knives of all types, styles, patterns, etc., they just "spoke" to me. However, it's not entirely unusual for some of them to stop speaking once I get them in hand...or, rather, they begin singing a different tune that does not resonate with me anymore so I sell them. Still, it's fun to try new things and see what sticks.

As much as I like GEC knives, I had sworn off buying any more because I became frustrated and discouraged with the difficulty of getting any new ones that spoke to me as well as the ridiculous prices the flippers sell them for. I still enjoy looking at them, however, and every once in a blue moon I stumble onto one that I like that is reasonably priced or I get lucky and win an eBay auction for one that for some reason managed to fly under the radar of the flippers and/or deep-pocketed buyers. Such was the case with these two...proving that sometimes fortune smiles upon those who are patient and persistent (not only the bold, the brave or the wealthy!) ::nod::

Sometimes you don't need a justifiable reason! How are you liking it so far?

So true! I've steered well clear of the GEC rabbit hole, but that 85 is way cool.

It was so you could say you have a bali-song in your collection, Ken! I wanted to be able to say that, but didn't actually want one, cuz other than showing off one's "flipping" skills I can't see a use for them, so I compromised and went with a Cold Steel "Paradox" which is shaped exactly like a bali but is a slip-joint 2-handed opening knife. Anyone who sees it asks "Can I flip your bali?" at which point I get to show them how that very interesting knife operates! 8)
