Case 6001 eBay Sold

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Thanks Jerry. I have been watching that auction out of curiosity to see what it would bring. As rare as the 6001 seems to be, in any condition, it's difficult to establish a value. Figured somewhere between $750 and $1000, have to say I'm astounded at the final price! $3000! ::woot:: Sure glad I found one when I did cuz I sure couldn't afford one now!

The last 2 bidders placed 48 bids in the last 10 minutes of the auction.

Yeah that one was a shocker. For the seller's sake I hope the buyer does not back out.

Regarding the 6001, I've seen pictures of maybe 4 or so in addition to the pics in Sargent's, in which there are two pics as I recall. I have only actually had in hand the one I have. My observation based on this limited sample is there were two versions. One version with a center pin in the handle and one version without a center pin. The version I have is a Case Bradford, and has no center pin. I believe the one zp4ja has is a Case Tested, and it has a center pin. The one that just sold on eBay (see OP) has a center pin. Question is, anyone know if the Case Bradford 6001 was always made without a center pin, and Case Tested version all had a center pin?? ::shrug::

Mumbleypeg, I can't answer your question, but I have a bradford as well. It has no center pin!

Thanks Phin. Looking at Sargent's 7th edition, page 192 there is a picture of a green bone Tested 6001 that has no visible center pin (apparently doesn't have one). Maybe the center pin was added sometime during the Tested era. ::hmm::

Thanks for posting Jerry!

Ken, I too have only seen about 4 examples also. One was submerged in Hurricane Katrina unfortunately but even a beat example is pretty rare it seems.
I posted mine for sale here on AAPK a couple of times.

When it comes to certain knives like this one and value quantification, I throw all the value guides out based on condition, amount observed, etc, but certainly don't go insane. I talked to a reputable CASE expert and dealer years ago and he said "not interested since he has owned so many 6001s". I find that hard to believe given what I have observed and the fact he has been full of crap on other things he has said.

I may actually resort to ebay for thinning my herd. My cost at buy BIN. If they sell so be it, if they don't no big deal. Unlikely I will use that format on the 6001 I have though as I got a pretty good deal on it and besides a very minor pin crack, it is in uncleaned near mint shape.

Thanks again for posting.
