Hey Remington collector, you say this isn't an authentic, can you tell me why? I'm new and am trying to get serious about collecting remingtons as I just inherited my grandfathers collection. But it's the little things that I don't see, cuz to me it looks pretty close to what you see in a book...thanks for any help!remington collector wrote:Authentic ? No, no quite.

Re: Remington Photos
Picked this up from a forum member,
I noticed the tang stamp is the early circle "REMINGTON/UMC" and at the bottom outside of the circle, hidden by the bolster, is "USA". I've not seen this stamping before.
I wonder if this tang stamp is concurrent with the dating given by the references for the circle"REMINGTON/UMC" stamp or if this is an earlier or later stamping.
Any one know of this knife patterrn or its cocobolo brother ,R728 with a later tang stamping? I would be much surprised if this knife pattern would have a latter stamping.
Whole lot of that petty Remington bone
A finely crafted tool and a tribute the craftsmen who made it.

Re: Remington Photos
Tang stamps on Remingtons aren't generally all that useful for putting approximate dates on their knives. Mainly, in my mind, because Remington only manufactured knives for 20 years (roughly contemporaneously with the Case Tested era knives). Since that is such a short period of time, there isn't really any difference in value between the tang stampings.

Re: Remington Photos
I'm hoping that someone may have and example of either the R723 or the R728 with an earlier tang stamp or for that matter, a later one would be great also

Re: Remington Photos
Here's one I found yesterday. That brings my total to a whopping three Remingtons all found in the UK. There is no model number on the back of the blade.

Re: Remington Photos
Here are two of my latest acquisitions and one of my all time favorites. The four bladed swell center is one of my favorite Remington's. By the way, the R6073 illustrates why it's inadvisable to take collector's guides TOO literally, Stewart and Ritchie's lists this knife with what they call a "crown" shield, sometimes I see collectors micro examining these books (like a stamp catalog) and assuming ANY discrepency is air tight evidence of skullduggery. However, I looked up this pattern in Sargent's and he shows the bar shield like the one shown here. The moral of the story is this: you have to let the knife authenticate itself.

Re: Remington Photos
Here are a few old Remington's I just took pictures of. I'm still working on my photography skills so they are a little out of focus, but I think you can get a pretty good idea.
