Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Little Valley N.Y. 1886-1963

The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was started by John Champlin and his son Tint in 1882. It was first incorporated under the name J.B.F. Champlin and Son as a wholesale distribution company based in Little Valley, New York. The business proved to be a successful endeavor, and it soon branched into a knife production company named Cattaraugus.

Here is my latest Cat find, it is 3 1/2" closed and is marked CATTARAUGUS in an arch CUTLERY Co, there is no LITTLE VALLEY on any of the blades. I think that this knife dates around the same time as my galvanic1882 marked pearl knives. The etch is still on this one and having it next to the etch on the galvanic knives they look very much the same. The construction is the same as the Plumbers whittler that we are having made for sale.

Hope to see to see you at the Queen show, Mike

Hi, I actually just bought a Cattaraugus knife at the flea market this morning for $20. I had never heard of the brand but it was one of those picks that I knew I would regret if I didn't buy it. Can anyone tell me about my new knife? It definitely needs to be cleaned up a bit. I'm not sure how old it is or really much about the company other than what I read in this forum.
Thanks!
-Caitlin

With it closed, it's 2 and 5/8"
It looks like the blades have been reshaped probably from being broken because they look shorter than they should be.
I really don't know much about knives- I've always appreciated them and bought them from stores but only recently have I started looking into older knives from companies that aren't around anymore.
Any information is much appreciated! :-)

This is one of my King Of The Woods that has never been sharpened or used or carried. Only one I have ever seen with a compass and a shield. Story goes that this knife was delivered to a hardware store and had a cracked handle. They laid the knife up on a shelf waiting until the salesman come around to exchange it. When the hardware store went out of business the knife was still up on the shelf.

I found this old split back whittler on ebay a few years back. It's 3 1/2 inches long and has white bone handles (might be ivory).
What I like about this knife is the stamp. As you can see, all 3 blades are marked with 3 straight lines. "Cattaraugus" over "Cutlery" over "Co".

I suspect that this knife was made before Cattaraugus was doing their own manufacturing. This is an educated guess on my part, if anyone has more information
regarding these old tang stamps, I'm all ears.

Wow Mike, that jack with the cockspur saw is fantastic! That is a rare and nice find and I am pleased to get to see it.
Beautiful old ivory whittler utahbound. I really like that pattern, particularly with ivory handles.

A nice little tuxedo whittler but I think the scales are bone rather than ivory. The Haversian canals characteristic of bone are plainly visible if you blow up the pic to it's regular size.Too bad about the broken blade.Never saw that style of stamp before;very unusual to put that many letters in a row on such a small tang.

here is what I got, wish the bone was in better shape, but the little ones are in excellent shape
the bone has good blades that walk and talk, the main blade will not lay down

That's a great knife Mike,as are all I've seen here.
Here's mine a fellow member allowed me ,as some others have,to add to my collection of farmers jacks. Thanks D.

A double-end jack knife(Levine "certain patterns of folders with blades in both ends are too large and robust to be called pen knives, while they are too simple, with only two blades, to be called multi-blades.These are the double -end jack knives. An even more unusual type of double -end jack is the Wharncliffe-shaped "farmers jack. It's two blades are a pruning blade on the wide end and a spey or budding blade on the narrow end")

Examples- Texas jacks,jumbos,sunfish,etc
