If you do a Google search on 'fox on the run lyrics', every response gives T.Hazzard credit for the song (the one we're talking about, not the one by Sweet).

When I was a kid I got a cheap 8-track player/radio tuner stereo for Christmas and one of the first songs I heard from the dinky little speakers was Tom T. Hall's "Fox on the Run." It sounded incredible to me, having had to listen to an old clock radio for years! ::tu:: That song has remained one of my favorites for decades now.

Cowboy, that Don Williams / Emmy Lou duet is killer. Thanks for posting it.

T.J. I like Lefty's version also. I almost posted that instead of Cash and what'shername.

I think I had a "J.D. Crowe and the New South" LP back in the day ... am I remembering that correctly, TJ?

You are correct. I think I've got one, the first one they did, just called "J.D. Crowe and the New South". At different times the New South members were Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice and KIETH WHITELY, among others.

Here's Keith Whitley with Ralph Stanley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykijm-gJ ... re=related Keith and Ricky Skaggs joined Ralph when they were both 16 years old. The lead guitar player in this vid is Renfro Proffitt, a good friend of mine. Renfro tells the story that he and Keith would wait until Ralph would go to sleep and then sneak off the bus and go get loaded. Keith started drinking very early. Imagine what he would be today had he not foolishly killed himself :( (alcohol poisoning).

I stumbled onto this one and can't tell you how much it moves me. Alison Krauss & Ralph Stanley- Heavens Bright Shore takes me back to a Sunday all day singin' with dinner in the yard at Chapman's Grove, a little General Baptist Church that my Grand-dad attended. It was on a dirt road, out in the middle of Southern Illinois farm land, heated with a Warm Morning coal stove in the winter and cooled by breezes blowing through big tall open windows in the summer.

Well, boys I got lost following all those Keith Whitley links in YouTube. MAN was that guy talented! His song "Tell Lorrie I Love Her" had tears pouring off my bewhiskered chubby cheeks. What a sad, sad story ....

Anyway ...

One of my favorite bluegrass bands was The Darlings, of Andy Griffith fame! Those boys were pretty good, and I always got a kick out of "Briscoe Darling" startin' 'em off on his jug ... "Anna one! Anna two!" And I chuckled when Sheriff Taylor played along with "Dooley," a song about a moonshiner!

I love old time country gospel. It's done so well by The Louvin Brothers, singing LEANING ON THE EVERLASTING ARMS

I like the old gospel songs, too! I remember when Grandpa Jones and Roy Clark would sometimes sing gospel songs on Hee-Haw. That was some of the best! And I remember thinking how nice it was that they didn't ruin it with the canned applause when the song was over. That just added a little touch of "reverence" IMO.

WOW!! Over 5 million plays on that vid. That's got to be the most popular cover on that tune.

I was fooling around yesterday (avoiding work!) on YouTube and followed some links to different country-bluegrass-gospel songs. I found Dolly Parton's 1989 CMA Awards show performance of "He's Alive!" and once again was blown away. When she gets to that chorus, I feel like a I get kicked in the chest and I get choked up in a big way! What a powerful performance!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbRPWUHM80M

Some of that arrangement reminds me of "Ghost Riders in the Sky." ::shrug:: maybe that's just me.

Doggonit, Cowboy. Because of you, I just spent the last hour listening to Dolly Parton and reading her Wikipedia entry. It wasn't time wasted though. I occasionally forget how much I enjoy her music and need a gentle reminder like SMOKY MOUNTAIN MEMORIES
