Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Little Valley N.Y. 1886-1963

The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was started by John Champlin and his son Tint in 1882. It was first incorporated under the name J.B.F. Champlin and Son as a wholesale distribution company based in Little Valley, New York. The business proved to be a successful endeavor, and it soon branched into a knife production company named Cattaraugus.

Here is my latest Cat, checkout the stamping on it. The first time I have ever seen this stamping. I think that it dates about the same as my Galvanic1882 knives!!

The Snips and Shears are also marked Cattaraugus Cutlery Little Valley NY

The knife is 3 1/4 closed and the ivory has nice grain to it. I think that it was made before JBF was making knives in Little Valley. Probably a contract knife like the Galvanic's. Both blades are very slow!! I had a large price on it because I have never seen another one marked like this. I have a whittler that does not have Little Valley on it too but the stamp is different. I will get it out and post it again, not sure where I posted it before.

That is a neat pouch MB, that was a nice find.
And J Bodine, now that is a nice line up!
What sweet stag on that fixed blade galvanic, and the ivory on that barehead jack is sweet. What is the type or purpose of that rounded secondary (or main?) blade? Table knife or clam knife....? Also, those shears are quite mean looking, they look to be great pieces of steel.

Thanks for the info, now all we need to do is find some real old catalogs showing the early patterns. That would be fun.

2 more Catt's to add. Interesting how they seemed to love using worm grooved bone. Here's what I think is a 3 1/4" 21479 jack and a 3 3/4" 22359 dog leg. The 22359 has an unpolished main spear blade and a pin crack on the back bone handle. Could it be an unfinished knife some worker took home?

Interested to know your thoughts on this unpolished spear blade.

Nice Catts, redrider. The blade(s) on the dogleg jack have been sanded, probably to try and clean them. Nice knife anyway - just missing its original finish.

Anybody ever see a tang stamped like this?

The compass knife I have is stamped 42211. BUT the 11 is a little off center, sort of crooked. Obviously, the 422 was on the pattern, and someone stamped the 11 after the fact, a little lighter touch on the hammer, and a little crooked.

Did Cattaraugus do some knives this way? It's white celluloid scales, so the 11 fits the pattern style.

Here is the tang stamp, on the hole punch blade.

Here is the knife:

Thanks for your opinions

Here is on of my Cattaraugus "scout" knives. According to my books there is no 11 for handle material. 1 is white fiberoid, 4 is celluloid, and 8 is white bone.

Thanks. What I mean is that this tang is 4-2-2-1-1 where the 1-1 is slightly slanted. The last digit, 1 , designates white celluloid I believe. Appreciate your help!

The white Catt Scout knife you posted, I don't know where you got it, but I do know
that it came from a friend of mine in Kansas a one time. I could tell by the red stain.
I know he never messed with the knife. Stamp was not changed while he had it.
