That type of forum is not for me so I came here.
So far I've gotten adult intelligent answers from AAPK which is the forum I am in looking for.
I'm guessing, hoping all the members I used to know on that other forum migrated to this one?

I hope everyone will forgive a bit off topic but Blade Objective’s comments hit home with me. I was a member of another (non-knife) forum for years and it was exactly as he describes above. Finally, after the last snide comment, I said that’s it. Why subject myself to other people’s rudeness. I don’t do that, and I’m not going to open myself up for that kind of abuse. However, I have seen nothing but positive remarks and courtesy on AAPK. This thread is a good example. There are differing opinions on this thread, but I haven’t seen anyone making smart-aleck remarks or being disrespectful. Kudos to all of you for making knife collecting enjoyable for everyone else.

That being said, here’s my Russell that I assume (and hope) is the real deal.

I think this is an older Russell knife but would like any info I could get. According to this thread the straight Russell name on tang is before the 1930’s?

Hello,

I recently acquired this Russell and have been doing some research to see when it was made, model, etc. The thing that is throwing me off is that all the others I can find like this have 3 pins, while this one has 4. Before I list it for sale on Ebay, I want to make sure I have an accurate description and it is indeed vintage. Thanks for any help given!

The above posted picture is not a true Russell, better late than never I guess. I wonder how it sold on eBay? This is one of my favorite AAPK learning threads.

I cannot verify your knife, but I can say that there are some strange things going on with it.
First, it looks to have been buffed quite a lot, at the least. The long pull is not straight on the main blade, and the brass pins have a strange "waffle" pattern on them, like they were peened with a framing hammer or something.
I suspect that, at best, it has been reworked.
Any old knife with blades that shiny are suspect, to me.
I hope for your sake that someone on here who is more of an expert can point out where I am wrong.

The rocker pin isn't centered, so I'm going with reproduction, maybe made by Camillus. But I bet it cuts well.

Take note of the location of the middle pin on your knife. You’ll notice it’s not centered between the other handle pins. Then go the very first post in this thread, and you’ll see one just like it that was said to be made from a Camillus.

This knife was one of my Dad's heavily-used working tools. He was a carpenter. I've begun to renew this heirloom but am unsure of the approximate year of manufacture. From what I gather in this forum thread, it is a pre-1933 and likely turn of century.

Hi guys , bump this post , I got this Russell’s Barlow today , the handle seems correct ,it was a bit too over restored for me so I did some work on it , I blued the bolsters and got some on the blade but nothing happened , so I tried to blue it out of interest but nothing happened, tried vinegar but nothing again , so thinking it’s SS , I’m the tang stamp also seems to crisp , I got it cheap from a friend so it will be a good user , he is sending me the other one he had and the blade on that is pitted and looks more correct , what’s your thoughts too pics the one I think has a SS blade , I’m being sent the other one

New to AAPK and forums in general, please excuse (and correct) any forum etiquette breeches . There’s a lot of great information here on Russell Barlows. Great Discussion. One thing I’ve always looked for in a straight line small Russell Barlow is they all seem to have a very distinct short tang (with the exception of the veterinary knives). The arch stamped knives and reproductions seem to have a longer , more modern looking tang. Anyone else observe this?

I would appreciate an opinion on these two. The two blade seems legit except for the main blade even though there is a R on the blade. I got them both in a swap shop so not much money into them.
