Got 'all' of my Barlows out recently for a Family Photo Op with a new arrival
Then a couple of days later realized there are 4 or 5 I 'forgot' to include - this knife collecting sure fuzzes the brain

Thanks danno & edge. I like em all, old and new. The Northfields are as well made as any old barlow out there and price is very reasonable on them if you get in on an early reserve from Mike at Collector Knives.

Nice collection of barlows Brumby

Het!! Like your Remington Gran Daddy Barlow , Blister. I don't have a Gran Daddy Barlow yet...

Yall got some nice knives! The Barlow is the pattern that got me started collecting. I need to go through them again. Its been a long time. I think I have over 100. Not sure anymore! Here's a collection of Furness Family Barlows from Sheffield England. They pretty much fall in with the dates that they were sold here. From before 1870 to around 1915.
20160321_174057.jpg
I also have a couple of dog head Barlows from KaBar marking their 100th anniversary. Blades are etched, but hard to see. I'll try to get more pics posted as I go through my collection. I'm getting ready to move soon so I will be digging out knives to pack. I'll try to get in a few photos.

Dale, what tips you off that the Craftsman Barlow was made by Schrade and not Camillus ?

Notice there is no pivot pin visible; it is made with the Swinden system.
I know because I have had them apart before.
In fact I think I have one on my bench now that is a parts knife. I will try to remember to take some pictures later and post them.

Thanks Dale. I have asked before and have forgotten: when did Schrade begin the Swinden construction ? Will be useful to help date some knives.

Here are a couple more from my collection. The top knife is a mystery. The tang has been ground so I'm thinking it may have been a second. ::shrug:: Looks Early 20th century but again I'm not sure. Nice old knife though. The one below is pretty cool too.
20160324_140819.jpg
The tang is stamped Case over tested xx. Just like the top Barlow I'm thinking early 20th century. If anyone can add more info chime in!

The Swinden patent was granted April 4th 1961, but in order for the patent to be granted there had to be a working model. From what I have heard from people close to the source, they were probably using it in 1960on some models, but the full change over of all Schrade Walden knives was probably after the patent was granted.

Here is a picture of a Craftsman Barlow in pieces.
Note the Swinden key way in the bolster. The Swinden rivet held the two blades and the center liner together.

Thank you Dale. Great picture that clearly shows what a "Swinden" is.
1960-61, what a time it was at Schrade: switching over from bone to Delrin and from blade pivot pin to Swinden key construction.

There are 2 or 3 Barlows in here that will probably end up in my collection.
Maybe someday I will drag my collection out and take some pics of those..
