Schatt Morgan Stag Whittler

Post by bkazz5 »

I have attached pictures of a stag balloon whittler which I recently purchased. I am curious that the tang is stamped 2000 while the blade etch appears to be a date of 033176 1 of 50. Does 033176 represent the date of 03/31/1976 or is that a serial number? If it does represent a date then why the 2000 tang stamp? Can anyone shed any light on this knife? Thanks

I do not know the answer to your question, but that is a very nice knife! Good find.

033 176 is a Schatt & Morgan model number. 2000 is the year of manufacture. Beauty knife.

Edit: Did a little searching but couldn't find another one like this nor could I find any reference to this model number. Also, I do not pretend to understand nor am I able to decode S&M model numbers.

Looks more like salesman sample code, but were they even still doing such things in 2000?

S&M uses six numbers like that to identify different pattern/models of their knives.

This is the same knife except for the handle material.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I have not seen another like it escpecailly with that "freestyle" etch. Is that common among Schatt Morgans?

Not that I've seen but then I'm not an expert. I asked on IKnife Collector about decoding S&M numbers. PM your email address and I'll forward her answer.

You may notice in the picture, my knife was also made in 2000.

Here's a knife my wife bought me for Christmas in '95 or '96 I think. It looks to be produced to the same standards as the OP knife. The stag is the gnarliest I own, the knife is dated 1992:

The breakdown of the six digit number is: 03= stag, 3= number of blades, 1 is clip main blade and 76 is the pattern number. I have also seen that style of etching on other Schatts. I'll see if I can find one.

Bill do you have a matrix chart with all the digit positions decoded?

I.E. 03 = stag
..........04 = bone
etc
etc

If 1 is a clip blade, what is 2, 3, 4, etc, etc?

Thanks Bill. That's similar to what I had done once I discovered which digit position was designated for what. Maybe we can use this thread to complete a chart of what's what.
