Rare Remington Collectible Sign
This item sold on Ebay last week for a considerable amount, $1524.00 in round numbers.
It measures 32 1/4" x 7 1/4".
I think we should save the auction photographs for posterity.
Somebody got a great old piece of Remington Cutlery history.
I've been told by a prominent West Coast Remington collector that the sign originally sat atop a large display case.
I cannot discern from the photos the purpose of those little metal clips on the underside of the folding two piece sign.
This should spark a little conversation and I'm anxious to see what others think of the sign.

Seen that sign & knew it would go for big $$ but not that much Holy Crap that's a little steep if you ask me but that's the way it goes on Ebay--I'd be happy to have a reproduction of that sign it is very cool----

Charlie this should help conceptualize the use of the display sign.

Re: Rare Remington Collectible Sign
Rocky, thank you for that.
I believe my West Coast friend doesn't understand the sign or I didn't understand his explanation or there was more than one way for it to be utilized.
That's just way cool.
Now I'm wondering if the knives lying on the flat surface are somehow secured to those tabs that are mounted in that piece of plate.

Re: Rare Remington Collectible Sign
That display sign is truly a great and rare piece of cutlery history and Americana. It's no wonder it sold at that price. Given its size at 32" long which is about twice as long as typical Remington display cases I have seen, I speculate not many dealers had space for it so probably not many were sold.

Charlie. All I can tell you is that I hope someone within the AAPK community scored this. Wish I had the deep pockets for this.RobesonsRme.com wrote:This item sold on Ebay last week for a considerable amount, $1524.00 in round numbers.

Re: Rare Remington Collectible Sign
I did alert a sophisticated Remington collector about the auction.
He was aware the signs had been available at one time, but had never seen one.
He said he would bid if it didn't go too high. I don't really know what "too high" might be for him. He has a fabulous collection, displays it at The Oregon Knife Show frequently and wins awards with it.
He has not written back to tell me he bought it.

Charlie if you have the capability to enlarge the sign photo it provides a great description of the sign and use. The "clips" you are referring to are patented "invisible" clips to hold the knife secure and in the open position while on display.
Edit: Even with the triangular bars and chains missing it was a great offering and in my opinion a very desirable piece to have.

Yes, it is a one piece. Does that narrow down a time frame on it?

Re: Rare Remington Collectible Sign
Kathy it does.
As others have stated, there is a pivotal hub to Remington history in regard to the development of the scout "can-opener".
The one piece can-opener which was pre 1924.
The two piece can-opener stamped Remington pre 1927.
The two piece can-opener stamped Remington Pat. No.1635649 pre 1933.
The two piece can-opener with no stamping pre 1939.
