The Not so Antique Swedish Barrel Knife by an Australian

I have always wanted a good Barrel knife, but buying second hand sight unseen is often a waste of money.

I sat down and scratched my head on it talked to a few makers of Barrel knives at various knife shows, including the late Maurie McCarthy, who made beautiful engraved barrel knives, and Thomas Gerner who has a good reputation for his traditional and twin bladed barrel knives.

I knew what I had to do, I had all the tools and materials so I spent about three days in the shed and at the end of it I have the following knife:

Blade, Spring: 600 layer Random Damascus
Butt: w pattern damascus
Liners: Brass
Ferrules: Sterling Silver
Handle: Mallee Root Burl

Length closed 100mm, (4")
Length Open 170mm, (7")
Effective blade length 70mm (3")

Budgeroo is an Aboriginal name for this rare timber of Outback Queensland. Also known as: Tom Russell's mahogany, Mountain mahogany, Mountain oak, Woolly butt, Brown Hazelwood.

Commercial timber merchants can no longer obtain stocks of Budgeroo. The remaining stands are mostly in protected areas of State Forest. Very few wood artists have used or know about the beauty of this timber. Due to its scarcity, it can no longer be found in premiere wood shows such as the ones held at Maleny and Brisbane. This unique timber is therefore a collector's item and an investment for the future.

The few wood artists that have used it, considered it to be one of Australia's most beautifully grained timbers. Its fine and highly figured grain contains much fiddle back and bird's eye. It also takes a polish extremely well.

Price: $50 per meter depending on diameter.
