N° 9 opinel is between 9 and 13 € (depending handle and steel) (9cm Lenght blade)
a douk with 11cm lenght blade is around 13€
for me it's quite same

I've never had a chance to try a Douk-Douk. I've never seen any for sale around here, and mail order seems to be twice what an Opinel is. I can pick up a number 7 or 8 Opinel for 10 to 12 dollars, but a equal size Douk-Douk is twice that. Plus, the Opinel has a blade lock, which I like.

One of these days, I may try one of I find one in a store, so I can examine it first. I hate buying strange things mail order.

I'm kinda getting into Opinels just for food prep got this #8 to go with my #7

I think you will enjoy using them for food prep. Just keeping them clean and dry is all that is needed like any other kitchen knife but if you ever want to use a drop or two of oil remember to use a food grade mineral oil or other food compatible oil.

One of my sisters told me that one of her best memories of France was using her Opinel to slice tomatoes and cheese for a fresh baguette while visiting the vineyards of Bordeaux.

A few years back I bought a bunch of Opinels(no8+10)at a fleamarket,they were used but in fair condition.They became my work knives on our daiy farm.Their main chore is cutting silage bales wrapped in plastic open.This is where the no 8 excelles,terrific slicer.

I suddenly relized that in the past year, with the exception of my SAK, I haven't carried any other knife but one of my Opinels. I even gave it the vasoline treatment and got it to stand up to a half hour of being totally submerged in a glass of water and still be able to open easy. Just a little stiffening.

it's always easy to open, you don't need to apply any treatment. to open a opinel just hold it by the barrel and hit the bottom of the handle on a hard surface, the blade exits alone

try the duk-duk it's like the opinel for these tasks and prices are the same

First of all, I don't know nuthin' about nuthin'.
But if I did, I'd wonder why if a duk functions like an Opie, costs same as an Opie,
but has flat sided metal grips instead of round contoured wood, why try one?
Afterall, if you've already found the best $10 knife money can buy with a history
that goes back to 1890...
Now naturally if you live in a heavily infested termite area metal mite be the way2go.

That's the beauty of the Opinel. It's like a blank canvas to an artist. You can sand, reshape, stain and make it your own individual knife. More and more, The Opinel is the only other knife I feel like carrying, or even owning these days with the exception of the SAK's. I don't know how long it's been since I have even bothered to carry any other knife but a Victorinox or Opinel. I find as I get older that my interest in knives has diminished to where I am only interested in the most practical. I've sold off and given away most of my knife collection. Same with my guns, I've cut down to a handful I really like and sold off the rest.

I've been experiencing lately. I haven't gotten to the
liquidation phase yet but do enjoy the return to basics.

You're probably a good bit younger than I am. I think it was about the time I was in my mid 50's I got the back to basics bug. By the time I was 60, I had sold off all my high end knives, and custom collection. Now being retired, I am doing more fishing and canoeing than ever, yet I fond a basic two layer SAK and an Opinel does everything I need. When I retired, I set out to deliberately simplify my life. Gave a lot of stuff to the kids and nephew, some friends. Sold off the rest. Now, Ironicly Opinel's have become a sort of hobby. Sanding them down, reshaping them, staining and sealing. It's weird, but I now have a collection of a half dozen SAK's and a dozen Opinel's. All are users of course. A SAK in the pocket and an Opinel in a belt sheath does me well.

I turn the big six-oh real soon. Plus I'm high mileage.
I'd almost bet if/when an Opie falls overboard it'll
float long enough to be saved.
Well from the deafening silence sounds like the Phase I & II
redeaux was a big hit. Or E1 so busy doing taxes to hurry up
their refund so they can spend it on knives they already ordered.

Since I took the last few down further than previous PWs
figured this go 'round I'd try less. Just took the factory finish
off and lowered the peaks on butt of handle and barely
influenced the rim lines on the side if you know what I mean.
Not sure of the ofishul Opinel term for that part of the anatomy.
Did spend more time on color change, looks pretty good
for beechwood if I do say so meself.

it's easy to tell how much your Opies are loved and used, really good stuff.

I finally decided that there must be something to the reputation they have as a slicer so I got a set of Opie 112 Paring
knives for the kitchen, they are AWESOME!! If anyone has been wanting to try Opinel and does not wish to carry thier folder, I can highly recommend the 112.

I guess I must love my Opinel's, for all the work on sanding and staining I do to make it really mine. Then I gift it to someone who needs a knife, and I start all over again on a new Opinel. I thik I've done most of the shades of stain Minwax makes, and a few of my own using Tandy's leather die and linseed oil. To me, it's both a labor of love, plus the love of an old funky design that is remarkably sturdy for field use as well as an edc pocket knife.

Maybe it's the mass produced plastic age we live in, but I'm tired of black plastic or any synthetic this and that. Knives, guns, cars, whatever. I've always loved the old time European stuff like old VW bugs, real walnut stocked rifles no black tactical stuff need apply. I have wood paneling in my house, and real hardwwod floors. I love how the Opinel has not changed with the times, and is still a nice wood handle to hang onto, and is insanely light weight for it's size. I love the way it harkens back to another time, like a nice wool sweater rather than some petro chemical polyester junk that wears out in a season or two.

Yeah, I love my Opinel's.

I like to include that to my knives collection,i like it cause its handy good for going anywhere in camping...or doing anything in rush..
