Rusty Case Classic

Anyone have a good way to get the rust off of this knife? What a mess. I have 5 like this.

I would say that removing the rust would just be temporary because the celluloid handles out gassing will rust the blades back like they are in a little time. If it were me, I'd remove the celluloid handles from the knife, have the blades buffed a little to remove the rust and pits and then have the knife re-handled with a more stable handle material. If those celluloid handle stay on the knife it will destroy the knife completely. The gasses off of the cell handles will eat away at the liners, back springs, and the metal blades. Sometimes you have to lose the value of the knife to save the knife. This is just my opinion and what you do to the knife is left up to you and you alone. I wish you luck in saving the knife. Its a nice pattern of the Case Classic to just set and rust away because of the out gassing. Its been my experience that the candy stripe, glitter gold, and the Christmas tree celluloid handles are the worst to shrink and out gas on the Case Classic knives. I've heard others say that the waterfall celluloid handles are very bad to out gas on the Case Classic knives but I've never owned a waterfall cell handled Case Classic knife so I cant say that is 100% true. Maybe some other AAPK members that have Case Classic knives with waterfall cell handles will weigh in and give you more information about them than I can. Good luck on whatever you decide to do with the knife and I hope you can save it.

Sad but true. It's the reason I got rid of the only two Case Classics I had. Both were Celluloid, one Candy Stripe and the other Waterfall and had not started to out-gas but I wasn't taking the chance. I also sold my set of Family Tree doc's for the same reason. The handles last forever for some folks but with my luck it's just courting disaster.

Edit: Make sure you isolate the effected knives. I've heard it said they'll not only destroy themselves but will take every knife in close proximity with them.

Good advice from both Aimus and Jerry. I wouldn't delay for a minute. Sorry this has hit your collection but cel handles of that era seem particularly troublesome.

I believe that candy stripe is the absolute worst for out gassing on the case classics. At least 90% of them I see on ebay show the signs of outgassing, if you know where to look.

I say buff it up a little, polish with some cream and cut something with it. If it is in your pocket, it can't hurt any of it's neighbors! Or send it to me!

i have to agree with ALL above.. ...IF IT WERE MINE....get it away from others....and use it, dave is soooo right...if its in yer pocket gettin used it cant affect the rest.....

Shame on Case on these,

They must have known. Similar to the waterfall in the classics series it is super aggressive in gassing out. As what others said, change the handles, However, it is no longer a true Classic and not worth the effort itself unless the knife has some more value than monetary value of the knife itself.

I bought an estate with about 10 candy stripe and gold stone case classics that had never been out of the boxes that have some surface rust. Anyone want to work on these?

I can feel your pain... I had a bunch of Case Classics go bad on me.. all celluloid handles... And of course they were all low run knives... This little beauty right here is a one of a kind Classic and never produced... It has the long tail C proto mark on the front bolster and proto on the reverse side of the blade... As you can see it also has a slight rust problem...

I used to have about 50 Classics but sold them quick and rehandled others to natural material... I havnt owned a celluloid handled knive since and won't buy another... I do wish I could figure out something to do with this knife... Besides put it in my fishing tackle box....

I agree that Case knew the Gas out problem was and is the end of a knife. What Case did was stop using is several years before the Classics began. The rest of this reply could be fiction but it does seem possible It was the people at Bluegrass and all the sponsers of the Classic program that made the decision to keep using the vast supplies of celuloid that they were stuck with. If I have my time table correct it was at this same time that the failing ownership of Case were selling off all the rare knives in the corporate collection to make ends meet so they couldn't resist the money from endorsing the use of destructive handle material in a new program that may or may not succeed. In fact it was probably never mentioned when the rights were signed off. Certainly by 1990 everybody knew what Celluoid did. They made movies with it in 1915 that had to be stored alone in a dark warehouse. So I contend that Case was not to blame but the ougoing ownership and a middleman producer were. Just look at who made their bones selling it.
