I own several Bulldog Coonstripe knives, the oldest being a 1983 Congress cut plug and 1983 1st generation Stockman Lumberjack. The handle became more popular in the 3rd Generation. (1993) and several patterns including the sowbellies had coonstripe handles. I can't speak for what it is made of but can assure you that it is probably the most stable celluloid or nonnatural handle variation that bulldog made. I have had absolutely no trouble with shrinkage or gassing of the coonstripes.
As a side note I will mention the Bulldog handle colors that in my experience do have problems with gassing.
1. Tobacco Brown, hard to find one that has not destroyed the knife.
2.Tortoise, again hard to find one that has not destroyed the knife.
3. Red Sparkle, requires constant maintenance to keep from discoloring the shields and bolsters.
4. Abalone celluloid, mostly shrinkage
5. End of Day, mostly shrinkage.
6. Duckfeather, mostly shrinkage
This may be more info than you asked for and is just mine and someother collector's experience. Hope it helps.

Can't help but comment on the 2 bulldogs that are posted, the End of Day Old Chum and The coonstripe sowbelly. The old Chum was out together in 1991 of course even though the blade says 1983 and the coonstripe was made in 1993. Not the handle shrinkage on the End of Day and that there is no shrinkage at all on the coonstripe. This was what I alluded to on my earlier post that justold posted for me in this thread. Nice knives. Thanks for posting them singin46. ::tu::

The shrinkage is not that bad, less than 1/64. Hardly noticable.

Trick Opener

Post by petesknives »

Not in the best shape, but the way it opens is neat. Hold the knife so that the ball bearing goes to the other end, then you press down on the blade and presto! It closes in the reverse order. Any other secret or trick openers out there? I'd like to see "em ::tu:: Ken

Hi Ken,

Very striking those are!

My discomfort with celluloid could stem from horror stories I've heard about the material, I've never owned one myself.

Are they Imperial knives? If so, don't they have history with Schrade?

No can do Ken :) :) But if I ever decide that I want to let them go, you will be the first to know. By the way I love those 3 Imperials of yours. I do not have any like them and have never seen any like them except in pictures. Gives me something else to look for now. Thanks for the pics.
