In the box or out?

Post by ky greg »

Do you guys store your knives in their original boxes or are they better stored in a roll or display case?...

Good question, I've always wondered that too. I keep my new ones in they're original boxes, with that fancy wax / oil paper they come with. Gotta figure if they ship / store em in that stuff, it has to be somewhat archival.

All of my older loose knives are wrapped in old t-shirt scraps and stuffed in a cigar box ! ::dang::

Good question greg. I used to keep all my new-in-the-box knives in their original boxes but I now keep them either in displays or a roll. My reasoning was that I had knives I didn't even remember I had until I went through them. Another thing is that every time I looked at the knife, I figured it was more wear and tear on the box. So I keep my boxes all in bigger boxes to keep them safe and have my knives where I can get to them for cleaning or ogling. I guess it all boils down to personal preference.

I remember a couple years ago I was ready to buy me a Case blue bone trapper and was watching them on ebay. I was going through my knives and found 2 that I forgot I had.

I like to store my knives in display frames or in knife satchels or knife rolls so I have realatively easy access to them when I want to look at them or show them to someone. (Ever try taking 25 knives out of their boxes and putting them back up ? ::dang:: ) I keep the boxes but I don't usually keep the knives IN the boxes. But that's just me.

I do something that I dont know if anyone else does but I cut a piece of cotton cloth and wrap the knife, then put it back in the box. I have heard not to use paper towels or the such because of something thats they are made with. I have stored my knives this way for many years with never an issue. If I do not have a box I still put the knife in a cloth then wrap in a piece of computer or office paper and mark the outside. I am sure there is a better way but this is inexpensive and has always worked for me. One day I hope to be able to display all my knives but until then this works.

I keep my very low runs in their boxes and the rest are on shelves or in cases.

I've got a big display case, full ( about 70 knives ) hanging over my fireplace--for show________some in knife rolls, some in sack-ups,some in their original, box & wrapper, some in wax paper, others in acid free paper wraps, and my GEC's (not on display) in the little tubes, that they came in. I'll, wipe em' down, apply Ren-Wax to blades and scales, oil the hinges, with mineral oil, when I,first get the knives,_____then,after I'm through playing, & photographing ---- I'll wipe em' down good again, before, I put them in one of the places mentioned above. I too, have a bunch of boxes, that I've saved, and will some day,put em' all back in the box____________________maybe ::shrug::

Most of my boxes are gone. The knives were upstairs in the safe but the boxes were in a plastic grocery sack in the basement when the flood of '06 hit. Lost all my knife boxes, albums, pictures and lots of other stuff. Of the knives I've bought since '06, I only keep a handful in the box. The rest are in one of those folders.

I keep most of mine in rolls cases and folders for easy access, the newer ones I keep in the boxes so I know what they are ::tu::

jerryd6818,

Thanks folks, lots of good answers and I appreciate all of them. After thinking about it, I guess what I was really wanting was a green light from you guys that storing/displaying out of the box is ok... ::ds::

Greg_______heck yes,put them knives out for folks to see______I'm always, stoppin' and takin' a look at mine !!!!! That's the,fun of collecting,to me___just remembering the stories, behind the knives, and comparing the different knives !!!!! I've often stopped in front of my display, and tried to pick,my favorite ???????????????? It ain't happen yet ::shrug:: ::shrug::
I'll take some out for cleaning, and put some new ones, in their place, so the display, stays, ''up-dated" a little along. I found two of these, old ""home-made"" wooden Case Cutlery displays,at the flea market,($10 bux each),several years ago,and hung this one over the fireplace,so that when you come into our house,it's the first thing you see !!!!!!!!__________good luck,Monk ::tu::

So, from your question you are wanting to know if we are inys or outys.......I'm an outy! ::nod::

Get them out of them boxes and put them somewhere you can better appreciate them! Rather in a display case or a knife roll! Knives are meant to either use or be appreciated. I've never seen much use in putting them in a safe where they get forgot. Keeping them out and handy will give you much more pleasure in my opinion.
God Bless!

I keep the ones in the boxes in brief cases. I keep a list on a legal pad. New, and near mint old knives in sackups.

All of my knives, whether I use them or look at them, are out, but I have every box saved. I even have the boxes to my son's knives.

All the knives I have for sale in my store, are, of course, in their box. And this is why I save all the boxes to my knives, because at some point in the future, I, or my offspring, might want to trade for a different knife or just need the cash. The box will make it more valuable.

Just my $0.02...YMMV
