Ken,
I can't tell from the photo, but is this a shell handle? If so it is the first German shell I have seen.
With that much rusting it may be due to off gassing from the celluloid. If it is off gassing, I would keep it away from my other knives. I had a friend loose a lot of money when an old celluloid all of a sudden started to off gas. I had looked in the case about a month before & he had looked at it about a week or two before he discovered the problem. I guess one celluloid started to off gas suddenly and really messed up some nice knives in his collection. It caused rusting on the blades of knives that were not celluloid.
FYI,
Dale

Well I am learning how to take good photos.
I just had to try this one out. Later I will take better close ups.
Most of these are cell handles.
Just a test

I don't know much about Case, but if I had to guess I would say yes.
Here is a Kingston that I got today. The handles have shrunk so I suspect it may be celluloid. I know that some companies made dark celluloid that looked like jigged bone.
Does anyone know if this Kingston is celluloid? If not celluloid, what could it be?
Thanks,
Dale

orvet ; I think not. But I did learn some things looking it up. So I am passing on one thing that was any eye opener to me and here it is.
The song Tom Dooley. The Kingston Trio made the song a hit in 1958, but it's an old folk song about a murder that happened in 1866. Noah traveled to western North Carolina where Laura Foster was murdered and Tom Dooley was hanged for that murder. Frank Profit Junior sings a version of the song that goes back to his great-grandmother's time. Profit's great-grandmother witnessed the hanging of Tom Dooley when she was a child in Statesville, North Carolina.

Orvet- I have one old Kingston and a couple of Ulsters with similar handles, all of mine show some shrinkage as well. I would say that the material would fall into the catchall category of "composition." I think that celluloid is generally somewhat transparent, where these are opaque. It is definitely not Delrin. Perhaps someone else more wise will help us out.

Nick,
I thought celluloid was somewhat transparent also until I read the article about celluloid on OKCA's (Oregon Knife Collectors Association) site. http://www.oregonknifeclub.org/celluloid_02.html
They shows an example of a L F & C scout knife in a celluloid called "Perfected Stag." It looks like dark jigged bone or Delrin. I know Delrin doesn't shrink, or at least I haven't seen it happen, bone doesn't tend to shrink, so the only thing I can think of would be celluloid.
Do you know of any composite that shrinks?
This has me puzzled!
Thanks,
Dale
