Another Question - What's In Your Pocket?

Post by Cowboy7130 »

Just curious about what's in your pocket, and what you would like to have in your pocket if you could ... and I will go first!

My every day in my pocket in case I need it knife is a Schrade USA Old Timer 94OT trapper that had plenty of life left in it when I spied it in the pawn shop for a sawbuck last year. Since then I have acquired two new, mint-in-box USA 94OT's, but have not felt the need to retire my old one.

But sometimes I feel like carrying my Moore Maker trapper, about the same size or a little bigger than my Case 6254 XX SS. It's a good, everyday working knife with smooth yellow delrin scales.

And on Saturdays, down at the ranch, I carry my Schrade USA 96OT Trapper, the bigger, brawnier brother of my 94OT. Good for slicing open feed sacks, trimming back mesquite shoots, dressing game, or turning little bull calves into little steers.

But here lately, I have been eye-balling some of the bigger Case stockman knives. If I could spend a little of the grocery money this month on a knife, I would like to get a Case ''75 model stockman with jigged bone or stag scales. ::drool:: Or, I saw a really nice Moore Maker 5304 Large Stockman at the feedstore today .... hmmm ... ::drool::

So, my questions:

What's in your pocket? ::paranoid::

What would you like in your pocket?

Would you carry a $100 knife in your pocket, knowing you're going to get it scratched and dinged up with work? ::dang::

I'm knife poor..... Got a worn out old SWISSTOOL that I've been abusing for 12 years or so. Right beside it is a big ol Camillus made Moore Maker trapper.

In my pocket, I'm currently carrying a Kissing Cranes by Robt Klaas stag trapper. The handles on it don't quite match. It looks like the guy that I bought it from stored it on something that took all the dark off the stag opposite the shield side. I figured, might as well use it and enjoy it.

Ain't cut a mesquite with a knife other than a machete in a long time. ;) Used that swisstool to pull a big thorn out of head one day when daddy went nuts in his jeep and took off in pursuit of something he saw. Had to get that thorn out so I could take my hat off for supper. ::doh:: Having a hat nailed to your head with a three inch mesquite thorn is not a good reason to wear your hat at the table in my father's house..

Dad's 87 now. He got rid of the jeep.

What's in your pocket?
Currently (right-this-minute), I have the following.
Right front: Schrade 194OT, customized (single blade conversion with filework) Camillus TL-29.
Left front: Remington's 1991 R1173 trapper, pre-war Pal Easy Open jack knife
Left rear: Remington 1989 R1128 Jumbo trapper
What would you like in your pocket?
pretty much the same, except replace the 1173 with a similar knife made with bone and carbon steel (not a stainless fan), and remember to put the R1128 away. I can't stand that knife (eBay deal gone bad, and it annoys me).
Would you carry a $100 knife in your pocket, knowing you're going to get it scratched and dinged up with work?

For years, I often carried and used an original R1173. It eventually got so worn I had to replace the clip blade. I just put in a bid on a Barnett plier-knife, if I win it I will carry it at least sometimes. I like old knives and enjoy carrying and using them.

Edited to add: I forgot about the Boker trapper I dropped in my shirt pocket earlier today. Honest, I usually just have 2 or 3 on me . . .
Quality should not be an accident. So what is the explanation for some of the knives we've seen in the past few years? (from A Knifebuyer's Manifesto)

owdwullie - DANG that would hurt! I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that image ... ::doh:: I know I'd cry if it happened to me!

coffeecup - yep ... ::nod:: imagining a scene from a movie, where you have been wrongly accused of a crime and are being frisked at the police station, pulling knife after knife after from your pockets: "Yes, officer, that's all ... oh wait, one more in my boot ... and in my other boot ..."

I've lately been carrying a Tidioute 735208 in river blue. Let me say that it is one fantastic edc knife! ::tu:: I've been using it now for a month cutting everything needing cut around the farm including round haybale sisal strings, feedsacks, etc. to opening packages, letters, and many other things. Ain't sharpened it yet and it still has a good edge on it.

I'm impressed with the quality of GEC knives. Can't beat them for a factory knife, just gotta remember to keep 'em oiled so they don't go to rusting in your pocket. I keep an oil rag on top of my guncabinet to oil guns down and wipe the knife down everyday. Still looks great!

As for what I would like to carry........I'm satisfied for now! ::ds:: At least until I get time to start making my own slippies, then I know what I'll be carrying! ::nod::
God Bless!

Lately, I've been carrryin' this Schrade 430T and a Case Bonestag Seahorse Whittler and a Case medium Congress with CV blades. I really like those seahorse whittlers, very comfortable to use, just wish they'd put one out with CV blades. Nice knives y'all are carryin' ::tu::

Here are the two knives I am currently carrying(not both at the same time though):top is a Browne&Pharr two blade "reverse congress"(?);one of the nicest custom made pieces I've ever owned. The second is unmarked but is definitely a custom with machined nail mark and dovetailed scales(only one rivet is needed to hold on the scales).I also keep a SpyderCard in my wallet at all times.

right now I'd realy like a 1970'ds red bone case stockman but it depends on my mood.

This is one I have been carrying lately...
Image

It is a little rehab project I did. Nothing fancy, but it rides in the pocket easy, and the old schrade steel is sharp!

Also, I carry a Benchmade Minigrip, and an SAK classic.

Since I don't own any customs, I don't know what knife I would like to carry, maybe a nice Bose or something.

$100 knife? I would not have a problem carrying and scratching one up, but I already have more knives to choose from than time to carry them all, so I would probably not carry a $100 knife as a first choice.

First I enjoyed all the posts in here.

Some Gr8 stories and knives. If only the knife could talk...

That "reverse congress"(?); is KOOL.

I see I am not the only one that uses a YELLOW knife.... ::tu::

Here is one that a fellow AAPKer sent me. She was in my pocket today rideing with me to the post office. I need to open up my stamp case, to count how many old stamps I had so, I could use them after May 11 2009. When the price of mailling goes up again.
I had to pull her out at the window and the lady or teller's EYES got real big and backed up. She did not say any thing but I know the feeling she was just about to. So I said this is a tool and not a wepon. Then slipped her back in my pocket fast... ::nod::

She is this lonely Dog Head from a friend.

The knife I would like to slip in my pocket is the gr8 looking knife made by our T.J Davison.

I always have my SOG Mini Vulcan in my right front pocket. It's my true every day carry.
In my left pocket will be one of the others shown in the second picture, or my Imperial Boy Scout utility knife that I somehow forgot to include in the picture.
The SOG is a hundred dollar knife and I like to have never talked myself into starting to use it. Once I did, I have enjoyed it tremendously; far more than I would have had it remained locked away.

I love threads like this, always fun to see what everyone carries. Originally, I carried pretty much all of my collection, from day to day the knife would change, now I've pretty much limited myself to two knives. They are, for me, the best balance of size, function and style ;) Both are variations of the Great Eastern model 25.

Top is the newest, just a few weeks old, it's a Tidioute barlow type, with mango scales, the bottom is a 25 Northfield jack, with the rear bolster stripped off, and some "pre-pocketworn" stag added to it. This one had been in my pocket for months until I made the mango barlow to be it's friend :) It's been sitting in the case for a week while I carry the mango-low around, and I took it out to snap this picture. I forgot how good that stag feels in my hand. it's commin' with me to work tomorrow :D

Would I carry a $100+ dollar knife? yea, I would. Unless it was a vintage heirloom, or something with some historical significance, I would carry and use just about anything that met my picky tastes. I think my "dream" EDC would be a Kevin Wilkins Leafstorm, will full titanium liners, damascus blade and translucent G10 overlays. That is one seriously sexy knife, completely out of the blue, considering I'm a big slippy/traditional fan. if you've never seen Kevin's work, he's worth looking up, for sure.

I usually just open my collection and pick out a different knife to carry everyday, except when I'm at work I carry a scharade clip knife....what I would want in my pocket is a Tested muskrat....and would I carry a $100 dollar knife in my pocket? yes, but i would not use it.

New knife today, going into the EDC Rotation tomorrow!

Case 6254 Burnt White Bone Trapper, 2000 Limited edition from an ebay seller. Strange looking scales but I kinda like them! I almost might say the scales were "scorched" rather than Burnt!

Darksev,

Those are a couple of great looking knives ::tu:: I went ahead and checked out your ever growing custom knives and I have to tell you, I am impressed ::nod::

I am particular to Schrade and the majority of my knives are new and never used, NIB, MIB ect... I sure would like to add some custom Schrades to the mix ::drool:: ::drool::

Thanks for sharing

Well, let's see... In my left pants pocket is a Hen & Rooster Quarter Horse Sowbelly Stockman with stag scales. On my hip, riding in a custom Bob Wilson made elephant hide sheath, is my EDC Fallkniven TK-3 folder with the VG-2/SGPS blade. Around my neck is a Buck Hartsook. Where else... I guess that is it only because I did not wear my Schrade Tool today. You just can't have too many knives. ::tu::

I found an old Buck 303 about 14 years ago in the road, this thing had been run over many times, main blade tip broken. I reshaped the tip and cleaned it up and it has given me 14 good years of service. I use it just about everyday for something, my old Buck gives a new meaning to Pocket Worn. ::ds::

Canal Street Half Moon Pie w/ caramel bone. It's replaced my Case red bone canoe as my favorite EDC.

I really need to order one in buffalo (or ebony; I can't decide which!).
