Leather knife pouches?
Would appreciate a source for just a simple leather belt pouch for my GEC #55 folding pocket knife. Also, does anyone make a thin, soft leather "slip" sort of case that you can slip a folding knife into and drop into the pants pocket (to protect the knife from loose change, etc)?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I got a couple of these from Knivesshipfree.com. https://www.knivesshipfree.com/index.php
They come in two sizes. ( When in stock.)

If you buy a Northwoods Forest Jack you get one of these for "free".

You can find a small belt sheath for Case Trappers on ebay. It should work for you.

I agree with mr rick about the ksf pocketslip pouch
Its in his top pic, a wonderful sheath
If the belt sheaths are made the same, they will also be awesome

Re: Leather knife pouches?
> to protect the knife from loose change
I went to an upholstery shop and they made me the black cowhide one. It works very well for me, but took some trial and error to come up with a size that was not too tight to get the knife in, yet tight enough for it not to work itself loose in my pocket.
the larger deerskin one I made by hand, but its actually too loose and the knife climbs out of it, not a good fit, I probably need to buy a 2 blade Barlow for it
. The small deerskin holds my peanut very well, hand made, multiple attempts.. these are just suggestions, I am not in the pouch making business.

fwiw, the Rough Rider Dog Bone Jack comes with a leather slip pouch, not sure it would be a match for your knife, but the whole package is less than $15, and you could get an upholstery shop to make something similar.. I would not want the cutout as it exposes the head of the knife, and like you, my goal is to protect the knife from keys and change, when I don't dedicate a pocket to the knife alone.

Jon,
YES! those are exactly what I envisioned, just a slip pouch of soft leather like you made. Perhaps I'll just get a piece of leather and do it myself
I'll look at the member's website also and see what he's got.

Re: Leather knife pouches?
In the 1980s and early 1990s Al Mar Knives included a small soft leather slip pouch to protect their knives in the pocket. I don't know if they still do that or not.
I have some in the boxes with the knives.
When I get my PC out of the shop & can post pics again I will show what they look like.
They were not quite a gloving leather but not far from it.

Re: Leather knife pouches?
I just received a pair of GEC small pocket slips. The leather is much thicker and coarser than I would like, but, it does fit a Pemberton, and they are very inexpensive. You could trim down the top flaps too.
Pictured next to the Deerskin slip I made for myself. The GEC slip weighs 14 grams, the deerskin one weighs 3 grams. The GEC slip is loose enough that the Pemberton will slip out if you hold the slip upside down. That can not happen with the more closely fitted softer deerskin.
I recommend looking for some thin split cowhide at Tandy leather, especially if you own a sewing machine.. Or go to an automotive upholstery shop, where they have such leather already, as well as industrial grade sewing machines.

fwiw, the GEC small knife slip also fits a 2 blade Charlow
I dont like the GEC because its mouth stays open, so its not likely I would put it in a pocket with keys and change. I wish GEC had used a softer leather, so the flaps might close over the mouth, keeping keys and change from touching the knife.
You can see here how my 2 blade Sheepfoot Charlow fits in a way that holds the flaps open (the Pemberton does not have that issue):

You can see the 3.5 inch Barlow sticks up past the end of the stiching

fwiw, GEC also makes a slightly larger pocket slip I have not tried, that might be a better height match for the Barlow.
on the left is a pocket slip made by an upholstery shop. It weighs 5 grams, but only fits my single blade Barlow Spear, wont even fit my single blade Barlow Sheepfoot, needs to be 1/4 inch wider. (it is a piece of leather 2.5 inches wide before folding, 2.75 inch wide would fit my single sheepfoot, a 3 inch wide piece would fit a 2 blade Barlow), Note the stiching ends 3/4 inch further up on the black slip, than the GEC small slip, even though both are the same 4.5 inch height. The GEC slip is 1.75 inches wide folded, equivalent to a 3.5 inch wide piece open. Thats about 1/2 inch too wide, open, for a close fit of folded soft material.

Since you mentioned our slips, I'll give you a look at a belt sheath we are almost ready to bring to market. We are hammering out the last details of the prototype. I have been wearing it for a couple weeks, and I absolutely love it. It is thin, functional and very stylish. A few more tweaks....

Re: Leather knife pouches?
very nice heavy duty belt sheath
how many grams does your standard pocket sheath weigh?
I read in your product description that cheap leather is not vegetable tanned like the saddle leather you use.
Is the use of garment leather not recommended for a knife sheath because it is chrome tanned and will cause the knife to corrode? Should I stop using my cool lightweight garment leather and deerskin pouches?

Interesting design Derrick. Looks like it mounts on the pants belt horizontally? What are the dimensions?

Any chrome tanned leather can react with steel. Usually, for short periods it is not an issue. Not sure how much it weighs. I will try to weigh it tomorrow.jon_slider wrote:very nice heavy duty belt sheath

Re: Leather knife pouches?
Pigskin can make a good soft pocket pouch and kangaroo skin is particularly good because it is thin, supple and very strong. I'm guessing though that you might not be able to get that over there.

Where did you get those, how much and what sizes are the available in?

Re: Leather knife pouches?
The black leather slips were made by a friend at an upholstery shop. Machine stitched, split grain cowhide. It took several tries to come up with a pattern that fit. I am not in the business, but encourage people who are, to make more. I think Ostrich would be cool too
If you want to go to an upholstery shop and have them make you some, the open leather dimensions are 3" wide, 4.5" long, and the seam ends .75" below the top. This fits a single blade Charlow very closely. For a 2 blade you will want to go to 3.25, or possibly 3.5" wide before folding and stiching.

Some deerskin slips I made, hand laced.

Re: Leather knife pouches?
For inside-the-pocket sheaths, why not buy a pair of deerskin or elk working gloves (about $12 at my local ranch supply store) and cut off the fingers? You would then have 10 pocket slip sheaths in 5 different sizes. Just a thought.
