All About Pocket Knives

Haven't restored this yet. Can't find any info on the age or style. Anyone have insights?

I have no information on the knife, but far as restoration goes, I would rub it down with oil, both the blade and the wood. That's about all that I would do to it.

As far as style, a knife for electrical applications (communications, demolition, etc). The sharpened notch in the tang is for cutting and stripping electrical wire.

I thought it could be for cigars, per the name Don Carlos. But the notch does look like a wire stripping notch also.

Glen, I don't think "Don Carlos" is cigar related. My stained-glass leading knife is also marked "Don Carlos". J.O'.

If you do a search for Don Carlos cigars, many, many references come up. Maybe not with your knife or the OP knife, but there is a cigar connection with that name.

I was curious about this as well, so I did some deep-dive internet searching.

I couldn't find anything definitive, or even any rumors or supposition, but I have a crazy theory- I went to the official F. Herder website, and looked through their archives (a feature of the website), and I found a portrait of what I assume to be Carl Weyersberg, one of the owners of F. Herder. But oddly, under the portrait it says "Carlos Weyersberg".

Now I assume that "Weyersberg" is a German name, but to add another wrinkle, Carl Weyersberg personally opened a branch depot of F. Herder in Buenos Aires, Argentina. So maybe he acquired the nickname "Carlos" while in Argentina. I can believe that while in a Spanish speaking country people might refer to someone named "Carl" as "Carlos".

The connections are thin, but maybe the "Don Carlos" product name was an homage to Carl Weyersberg.

Like I said, just a crazy theory.

The portrait. It does appear to say "Carlos Weyersberg". (that's how F. Herder labeled the photo)


And on a related note (what type of knife is the OP's), in my searching I found an F. Herder catalog with the listings below. Although the top knife doesn't have "Don Carlos" on the handle (like the middle knife), it does say "Don Carlos" on the blade.
