All About Pocket Knives

hello all and thank you in advance for your help...ive had this knife for a long time..ive never seen one where one side is brown and the other side looks black..also im curious about how old it is...all the blades have a strong snap when closing..thanks andy

Welcome to AAPK. Per information in the Tang Stamps thread that stamp was used 1941 to present. viewtopic.php?p=388303&hilit=Ulster#p388303 The Ulster scout knife is probably the most commonly seen Ulster pattern - they made millions of them over the years. My semi-educated guess would be yours is from the 1960s/1970s.

Regarding the mismatched handle covers, although uncommon it does happen. I have a Cattaraugus scout with similarly mismatched covers (significantly lighter color on one side than the other). They were made to be tools, not collectables, and the factory made no effort to match them. At some point in time the manufacturing operator ran out of covers from one dye batch and started using covers from another batch. In this case that happened to be on one knife. Cutleries in general are notoriously frugal - why throw away a perfectly good handle cover? It happens.

thanks so much ken..i was saying to myself that maybe it ran out on this knife and started a new batch...im not asking for a value but in your opinion would this make it a rarer more desirable knife...thanks andy

variants like yours may be more desirable to the 1% of collectors that collect manufacturing variants but most likely not ….. actually your knife might be less desirable to the other 99% of collectors because of the variation in bone dye. It’s a common knife but a solid contender for an every day carry piece

I like conversation pieces, but rarely attach extra value to them. Because as pointed out some consider it them defects.

one last question.....i do sell on ebay...im on several other forums...i know some frown on selling right after making a post...there was one forum that if i remember right wanted you to wait 6 months before listing an item after posting a question...i like to do things by the book.so its there a waiting period on this group..thx andy

I have a question about the boyscout knife made by Ulster that I have it look like the one in the pic it only has Ulster USA on blade, has the round boyscout symbol on handle, was not made with key ring has Phillips screw driver and original 4 blade sorry I could not figure out how to post a question except by hijacking this post please forgive me
