All About Pocket Knives

Can someone tell me where they get their zippered knife cases with elastic loops like so many people use. My last one is almost full and I need one. I am used to paying like 20 bucks for these things but I see them on eBay for more than that now. Am I just an old fart that needs to pony up and pay the extra few dollars or is there some place online that has cheaper storage cases that I don't know about.

If you don’t object to dealing with TEMU, they have a lot of zippered knife cases. They have hard cases that start at under $20. I have a couple and have been very happy with them. They have 4 compartments for knives with dividers.

Just a word of warning, a lot of those cases are meant to temporarily store knives while you are transporting them, but not for long term storage. Some have caused leaching of the dye in bone, or started corrosion of the shield/bolster material, or the dye from the fabric/leather of the roll actually stained the handles of the knives. They are certainly handy to use if walking around a knife show, but I've quit using them to hold anything permanent.

I agree. I warned the OP of the dangers, including a link to one of the many threads here with testimonials about the problems with storage in knife rolls/cases. viewtopic.php?p=1136698#p1136698 But apparently to no avail. They are his knives, to do with as he pleases.

IMHO Sackups are the best solution. They won’t prevent all problems (they won’t stop celluloid outgassing for example). But they won’t CAUSE the problems, as many have unfortunately found to be the case with knife rolls or cases.

As I’ve said before it amazes me how we knife collectors will invest hundreds if not thousands of dollars buying knives, then opt for the cheapest storage we can find!

I couldn't agree more Carl and Ken Over the last couple of decades I've owned more than a few of these "knife paks" with the elastic loops, cloth liners, and feau-leather covers with snaps. When I first started buying these in the 1990s, they were handmade in the U.S.A. with quality materials and retailed for between $10 and $20 shipped. I never experienced a problem with these. Over time, the quality shifted and I started seeing shadowing of the elastic on some handle materials and a slight transfer of the cloth liner and/or colors to some of the backsprings of knives. I suspect that these are all made outside of the U.S.A. today.

Nonetheless, my experience was that these are good for short-term storage (1-2 weeks) but not long-term storage. I also found that certain colors of my celluloid-handled knives would outgas sooner in my knife-paks and that was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

I now store every knife I own lined up in the open in small drawered tool chests designed for long-term storage of "tools" with DryTote rechargeable desiccant packs. When they have absorbed all the moisture from the air that they can, the blue color-changing dot on the front of the pack will turn pink, and in minutes I can recharge the pack to blue. I live in a high-humidity climate and while my HVAC keeps humidity in check, I take no chances when it comes to protecting knives.
