All About Pocket Knives

What do you think you get if you' win this on-line auction? The pics are all you have to go by and that can be very deceptive. Look them over and post your answer. I know we have "experts" on here that profess to have the ability to read a knife in a shoe box with the lid closed, but my experience is it is very hard to read a knife unless it's an across the room fake or else you're holding it in your hand. What do you see here? Careful, I won the auction, so I know 100%.

Just by looking at the pictures, I would guess a Buck Creek Bobcat Solingen Germany Congress. It says 4 knives, but did you get 4 knives?

Is that the PUMA cat on the blade?

I think they are different.

On line auctions at a challenge for sure. Poor pictures and even poorer descriptions are the norm. I have gotten some good knives but have experienced buyer’s remorse also. Sometime I feel is another form of legalized gambling.

That one pic says Solingen Germany, but they really look China made to me...

Reminds me of the Owls Head brand, supposedly Solingen made but seem low end Chinese quality.

I'll give others a chance to look at this and post but will come back within a few days and post more pics of the actual knives that were in the lot. The pics already posted were used in the auction. It's not so much of a question of what you see is what you get. It's more like hope for the best but expect the worst.

Maybe hand made by ole paki stan. Is the the blade fully open in your photo? Not having them in hand it is hard to judge, but I don't think I'd trade any of my China RR, Colts or Marbles for them. But then what do I know.

This! I know nothing about Buck Creek knives. But if that blade in the photo is fully open, and not distorted by camera angle, the knife has problems.

I wanted to come in and update this. Jim was right the first knife in the box with the most pictures is a well-made German knife. The blades walk & talk. It was the main reason I wanted to bid on the lot. BTW the blades on this knife are just fine. This is a very comparable knife that is listed on eBay now with many pictures. I studied these before I did any bidding.

I saw that and kind of based my bidding on that even though I knew the price might be inflated. From there actually there is only one side of any other of the knives shown with the blades closed. It is a Buck Creek and stamped Germany Stainless. It isn't marked China, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it is sadly inferior. It is a 2-blade congress or senator pattern.

Then there are 2 knives in wrappers that I think had never been opened. One is a smaller congress pattern with a Buck Creek shield that is also marked Germany Stainless. It also has Bear & Bull and the blade etch. Bull is a good hint about the origin of the knife. It is sadly inferior as well. Not marked China, but that would seem to be the case.

Finally, there is a smaller 4-blade congress knife. It is also inferior and stamped Germany Stainless with a Buck Creek shield. As compared to the good German knife it is slightly smaller, the bone isn't near as nice, and the snap of the blades just isn't as good. Also, a product of China, I think.

I thought $100 max bid based on the first knife and question marks on the other 3. I got them for just about that including tax and commission. I won't get rich here but will do better than break even. China knives will sell, but not at a premium. This auction was within 25 miles of Indianapolis and the auctioneer told me that I was the only local person to win a knife. All the rest were shipped. They had some nice knives including Case with exotic handles. The buyers paid about 30% in fees plus the S&H charges, I didn't see any bargains, though I won several other lots.

I'll add a few pics of all of the knives. The good knife is top L look at the difference in the bone. Also note Solingen Germany vs. Germany Stainless on the other knives. In hand it is easy to pick out the quality knife, but not so much from auction pics.

Older Buck Creeks will say oil joints on two blades , and Soligen on two

Here is another one I noticed this morning that in an on-line auction near me. The auction title says - VNTG Knife Collection and that's all. There are a few other pics, but none of the pics show the knives with the blades open. Based on what you can see what would you bid on these without knowing the specific condition of each knife? I think there is one better knife in here and maybe a few other EDC type knives. The auction ends next Saturday, and I'll come back in and post the winning bid.

Based on just this one picture, I wouldn't pay over $30, but that's just me.
