Wm Dartt Limited pen knife

Post by Buckupngit » Thu Mar 16, 2023 5:11 am

We recently found an old pen knife while cleaning up a property with a home built in the late 1800's to early 1900's. It is a small double blade knife with pearl handles. The larger of the two blades is stamped EmDARTT LIMITED GERMANY. The stamping appears to be done w/individual letter stamps as they are not perfectly aligned or spaced. Does anybody have any info on this knife or manufacturer?

Thanks,
Tim

Buck': Neither Levine or Price lists any Wm, Dartt Co. (You must have misstyped it, "Em Dartt) .There was a ton of German makers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Anyway it's a nice find. Somebody here will probably know.Good luck and Welcome to the site. J.O'.

The photos clearly show that it is not a misspelling of the name "WmDartt LIMITED GERMANY". A closer inspection of the smaller blade revealed the same stamped name/manufacturer. I've been able to find one reference to a knife manufactured by the same name that was dated 1898 and a shving razor with a more refined stamping of the logo that was dated in the 1950's. Would really like to know anything we can about this manufacturer and knife.

Thanks,
Tim

Tim, my copy of Goins has 2 very brief entries for Dartt, which seem to indicate that he made knives, or had knives made, both in the U.S. and Germany in or about 1898. Attached are pictures of one that I restored a few years ago that does not have the "Germany" tang stamp. I hope this helps.

Thanks Herb,

It was your post from when you restored your knife I was referring to as the reference dating a Wm Dartt knife from 1898. The biggest reason I'm trying to drill down on this knife is our restoration of a home built in either 1889 or 1902. We are trying to get it registered on the historical record. We've found several documents in the house from that era and they with the knife can help establish the building as being a candidate for the registration. Your image of the document from Goins is very helpful.

Thank you for responding!!
Tim
