All About Pocket Knives

Hello,
I am new to this forum. Love it so far! I am a school teacher in California. It is my understanding that CA laws states the only knife I can take on a k-12 school campus must be non-locking with a blade less than 2.5". I want a knife that I can put in my pocket every day, even when I go in to work. So I would love to get some model recommendations from you. I am originally from Pennsylvania so I am partial to PA manufacturers like Case and stuff from Titusville. I like classic looking stuff and modern. Looking for something that looks good with good quality steel. It will be a knife that I use lightly, for opening boxes and stuff like that. Looking for something in the $100-$200 range.

Buck will soon be releasing a model 250 Saunter with Carbon Fiber handles and S35VN blade steel. Blade is right at 2.5 inches but it's a sweet looking Drop Point blade similar to the LTC's above. Priced within your range. Sorry but I don't have a picture of this one as it is not released yet.

First, welcome aboard simpsoncelloteacher. Good suggestions have already been offered. I'd like to point out that it is not uncommon, in fact it is not unusual for a knife to become lost. I think this is especially true when one is not used to carrying one on a daily basis.
Thus, you might consider starting with a lower priced model such as the Case Copperhead mentioned previously. Easy to replace without a lot of expense. Also you can up grade as you gain experience.

Another one i would consider is a Case 1/2 whittler, very good compact EDC knives.

If I were you I’d go to the Case web site www.caseknives.com, scroll down to the bottom of the page, click on “Case Dealers”, then “Find a Dealer”. Input your town or zip code, etc. Go to dealers near you, find what you like that meets your criteria. While you’re on the website if you look around at the various patterns you can drill down to the specifications, which will tell you blade lengths on each pattern. Or you can always measure them at the dealer.

The search is part of the fun, and you can’t beat looking at the various knives at the dealer. Looking for knives on line just isn’t the same.

I have another tactical knife with that steel that I love. (Pro-Tech TR-5). Also, I have a very distant familial connection to the Buck family. Also, Buck started where I live. Here in San Diego. So I love buck too.

Okay, I do have a couple questions for you. 1. How do you know that Buck is releasing this model 250? Where does one learn about these releases. 2. What is the best way to get my hands on one when they are released?

Quick Steel, Oh yeah, good point. I probably should start with a cheaper model until I get used to carrying every day. Nice thing is with a small blade I can keep it in my pocket even when I go in to work. Happy New Year! ~Andrew

1. I know about the 250 from being a member of the Buck Collectors Club but here is a post with some catalog pictures and a description. Scroll down a bit within the first post and you'll see the 250 Saunter.

2. Getting your hands on one shouldn't be too difficult. "Shouldn't" being the operative word here as they are allegedly a Limited Edition offering. Just check the Buck website periodically or follow that thread that I linked above. MAP pricing is set at $159.99 which means that's the minimum amount that dealers are required to charge. They can charge more than MAP but not less.

Thanks again Railsplitter. I will get registered at Bladeforums and check out the catalog. I'm going to keep my eye out for the 250. I like the Fallkniven LTC's too. Specifically designed to be legal. All the regulations here in CA are ridiculous! But I'll jump through the hoops.

Okay, I saw the Buck 250 Saunter and it looks really good. And I can put a lanyard on it too, which I like.

What i like about GEC and Fallkniven knives is that they arrive with truly sharp edges. Many other brands arrive with rather dull blades that require further sharpening before they will cut/slice effectively.
