All About Pocket Knives

I have an old pocket knife (Wards). It looks like 386 numbers on the back but is dirty and hard to read. I couldn’t find one on EBay but google came up with one on WorthPoint which I don’t have a subscription to. From what I read it was described as made by Western. Can anyone help me with this and confirm that?

Made by Winchester, as many Wards knives were.

I have a Wards similar to yours, DMLEATH. The shields different.

I'm showing mine next to a Winchester that seems to have relative features.

I have another Wards but do you think I could find it? Not a dog leg but I wanted to show it off.

No stamped number on the pile side.

Western made a lot of Fixed Blades and Knife/Axe combos for Montgomery Wards under the name Western Field. But that was Fixed Blades.

I agree with Steve. Looks like a Winchester pattern no. 2974 which is a 3-1/2 inch serpentine jack with clip master, jigged bone covers. What’s the closed length on yours?

According to Levine, many Ward's pocket knives were made by Utica who did make quality folders before WW2.

OP knife no doubt made by Winchester (Walden). JMO.

The Winchester dogleg jack that Joe (FRJ) posted is different, but I believe his to be an earlier Winchester (Napanoch era) based on the bone jigging and on the master blade being in front.

The Winchesters made for Wards are from the later eras, most likely 1930's.

The Wards knives made by Utica are (based on my observations) from after WWII, late 40's to 50's, made on the same tooling/patters as the Kutmaster knives of the era and using Rogers bone for the bone handled patterns.

After that (1960's) Camillus took over, making knives for Wards with the POWR KRAFT tang stamp. These are somewhat scarce, must have only been in production for a short time.

I recall in the late 1970's to early 80's, Montgomery Ward sold Case and Kabar knives.

Does anyone on this forum collect Wards knives and have an interest in this one? I was thinking of putting it on EBay but I wasn’t sure how the most accurate way is to describe it. It seems like the consensus here was generally that this knife was made by Winchester and one felt like it was similar to the Winchester pattern 2974. I know it’s not a high dollar knife. Any input is welcome

Nice old knife! It is really hard to put a price on used knives, depends on condition a lot. If you put it on ebay, take good close up and in focus photos of every position and start a low 7 or 5 day auction and see what happens. I would think it should be worth 25 to 100 bucks but that is just a wild guess. Be sure to mention any faults along with the good points. good luck Terry
