Here's my little collection. I have some half-whittlers, but I'm not counting them...

Thanks Gary! I wish I could, but I'm afraid I can't leave mom for that long. She will be 100 in November!
I have to do a lot of things that my wife can't do for her, so I'm gonna' have to pass.

You must be particularly fond of Seahorse Whittlers. Not counting the 3 Camillus Whittlers because they are stockmans, four out of the seven that you are showing are Seahorse Whittlers. When I started collecting the Seahorse Whittler's master blade and handle shapes looked so odd that I never considered buying one. Since I now have even odder knives and I like whittlers I should try one. As far as I know they are all 3 blade split backs. That is good. Have they been made recently?

Nice whittlers.

Yes sir MSJ, the Seahorse pattern grew on me. I think the wharncliff master blade is a favorite of mine. I find them to be very functional.
I guess I call the 72's whittlers because that's what Camillus called them. I see your point though. And yes, the seahorse whittlers are more
recent knives. They are an old pattern, but the ones I have range from 2013 to 2021. The oldest one in the picture is a Cattaraugus from
the early 1900's from what I can gather.

Yes, the Camillus 72 and the Schrade 863 (and others) are neither whittlers nor stockmans, but they are sure nice knives. Sometimes that pattern has been called a carpenter's knife, I believe. CASE made a pen knife which apparently they called a half whittler and by now collectors are calling all manner of pen knives half whittlers. They are certainly nothing of the kind because a half whittler is physically impossible if one subscribes to the classic definition of a whittler. Similar idiocy might be a half moose. As long as one is talking about the CASE pen knife I would reluctantly accept the company's name for it, but not any other pen knife. A half congress is a legitimate moniker. All that aside, the whittler in all its legitimate forms (with and without wedged springs, and sometimes with three springs) is a wonderful collectible and using knife as well. Thanks for a great thread!

So I guess this is a 3/4 congress whittler, who knew, is a 6 blade congress a congress and a half? Inquiring minds want to know. Personally I think half has no business being used in knife normclature. But that's just me YMMV. Beautiful knives by the the way.

This is a three spring, no wedges. Some purists would not like it. I like it.

Nice pearl! I can't quite make out the tang stamp. Who made that whittler? Remington?

Exactly, Triver! The 72 is called a carpenter's / whittler knife in the 1946 catalog, so I guess it just stuck...I agree the "half whittler" thing is crazy.
Marketing is a wonderful thing, ain't it?
And those are some fantastic knives you posted! Thanks so much for the eye candy! ::tu:: ::tu::
