I’ve been using individual letter stamps to mark the liners of the knives I work on and decided to get something a little nicer. It works really well.

I looked at a lot of different ones and ended up ordering one from these guys;

A little pricey and it took a couple of weeks to get it but I’m happy with it.

Did you do a total design OR did you have to chose a theme (sorta like business cards)?
I have a design in mind I want....

This particular one was their “off the shelf” sorta thing. You get a circle (available in different sizes) and you tell them what two letters to put in the circle. They do custom stamps as well but I couldn’t tell you how much they cost.

Thanks Jeff.... I'm gonna check into their services.

Fortunately, my initials allow me to file mine in a metal bar. No enclosed letters like B or O or D ect.
Mine are JW. My stamp is within the "L" on the left.
This little bar of steel is too mild, I assume, to harden it for stamping on anything harder than this copper.
I don't understand heat treating or tempering or steel in general.

Very interesting Joe. Mine are MT so I might be able to swing a filed out shape. I'll have to think about that.

I have stamped all my scratch made knives with a stamp set.
BUT... sometimes I cant seem to get the letters like I want 'em....

That stamp looks professional and a very good idea, but look at the trouble you have today trying to id a knife maker from the 1970's that only used their initials. As your work progresses maybe you can get a stamp with your first / last name?

I have used stamps from sets too for various things. They are not easy to line up.
That is a great looking fixed blade you have there.

Of course the letters have to be in reverse image.
Make your letters in reverse (not an issue with MT, lucky you) in the size you want them to be on paper.
Super glue image to end of prepared stamp and file away all but the letters.

This might be a good point for some of you fellows to take a look at this tutorial I did about using an Electro Chemetch.
I like it because I can attach blades and bolsters and that are steel. I believe there is another chemical etchant that can be used on brass and nickel silver.
I think I paid less than $200 for my Electro-Chemetch machine several years ago.
I know Jantz supply sells them, I know Tru Grit also carries them and I imagine several other companies as well.

This tutorial will explain a little bit how to use the machine.

While I do have a stamp, it was certainly not my first priority. I had the etch machine long before I got the stamp for the brass liners.

I hear ya Dale. For your application, the Electro chem is definitely the way to go. That is a lot of info to stamp out with a letter set.
AND, for marking a hard blade, that is definitely the way to go.
But, my thing is this, for a circle with 2 letters in it, I am going to try to be $100 and done. I think I am just going to mark the liners.

I guess one day somebody will say this about my work...."I wonder who this guy was that marked his knife repairs like this? Well, no matter, he did crappy work anyway."
Maybe my grands and great grands might know.

Electro would be a bit of over kill for my little simple "logo".
And, I hope that stamp will last me till the Lord says, "Come on home".

Well.... my stamp is on the way.
I had to pay a little more than the $100 I was hoping for but If I just stamp liners it should last me.
I settled on the MT in a circle. Thanks for telling me about the people you used for your stamp Jeff.
They are making mine.

These guys are great Jeff. They just sent me a drawing of what my stamp will look like... For approval....
I wasn't sure if they were going to do that but they actually sent me 3 variations and I could choose one for the actual stamp.

Yes, BUT, I don't like the way that sort of thing looks.
I would rather just pick up my hammer, my stamp and WHAM!!.... done!
And it looks the same every time.

But, that is just me....... and MY OCD.
