My $1 schrade

Who needs ebay when you've got yardsales and flea markets? Last weekend I stopped at an estate sale, asked if they had any knives and the old guy replied "yeah, I think I got one over here in this tool box" he pulled it out and squinted at the tang "schrade and walden, purty rusty" He handed it, to me and I looked it over "what'd ya have to have for that?" He cocked his head sideways and said"awww, how 'bout a buck?" Needless to say I left with it. It needed some help, the pivot pin was shot, everything on it that was steel was pitted and the handles were caked in calcium deposits which I could have cleaned off, but I was gonna keep it anyway so I replaced them. The bone I used to replace them I found while canoeing down the local river, it was washed up on the bank in a pile of drift wood ,looked like a horse or cow legbone.
as it was from the yard sale:
water had layed on the blades for a while
Some sanding to show just how deep they were (the blade had been tipped and reshaped, I trued up the repair to make it presentable)
everything cleaned and ready to be reassembled
the leg bone after I had cut on it a bit
I ended up measuring wrong and cut each handle too short
so I improvised and did some brass spacers, worked like a charm
finished product
I love projects like this

I am glad I am not the only one who cuts a handle too short once in a while!
I will have to remember that little trick!
$1 + free bone + a little work = custom knife!

Hey mm - any model no. markings on that Schrade? - looks like the big bro to my 1250 - the 2 bladed hunter.

It looks like a 225H. The "H" designated the lanyard hole in the rear bolster. This is the 2 blades Open Stock predecessor to the 225OT.
One of my favorite folding hunter patterns. I remember my dad being very excited when he got one in the late 1950s or early 1960s. He said, "Now I won't have to stop and sharpen a knife half way through dressing out a deer."

Dang MM, you've got me stoked now! I have a mint 125OT, but I'm not real crazy about the plastic, resawn looking handles on it. I know where there's an old elk carcass hanging in some brush up on the side of the mountain behind where we live, so in the next few days, I'm going to make a trip on the ATV and see if I can find it and decern if there's anything big enough to do exactly what you did as far as rehandling your Schrade. Thank goodness I don't have to completely disassemble it, or it would be out of the question....but I think I could handle a rehandle job. If it looks even 10% as good as your finished product, I'll be more than pleased.
A great looking job you did. I'm amazed and quite envious of your work. The little brass "shims" on each end are sweet!
Thanks for posting your project. It's a great incentive to us novice knife guys.
