That's a really broad question with very little information regarding your preferences in a carry knife.

Back at the end of 2010 you bought and carried a Buck 055. Can we assume from that you prefer a single blade knife or have your tastes changed during the past four years?

Before everyone jumps in with their suggestions, I think answers to the following questions would help.

• Still single blade?
• Modern (tactical) or traditional?
• U.S. made or are imports acceptable?
• Do you have a preference as to blade profile (clip, spear, Wharncliffe, etc)?
• Locking blade or not?
• Any preference as to handle material?

Not dis'in your suggestions Scott (even though it may have looked that way and for that I apologize). Both knives are excellent suggestions. My point is, the OP has to live with this knife and there was nothing in his post to indicate his likes and dislikes.

Yes you are right, back in 2010 I bought my first pocket knife (Buck 55) and carried it for around 15 days until my mom saw it. She loved the knife and it became her EDC

After that, days passed and years passed and I never bought a knife. I came across situations when I thought "oh a knife would have been helpful" but soon forgot and never carried one.

Now I am thinking of buying one which would be my practical EDC. My brother gifted me a knife (some made in Taiwan) which is very beautiful but the blade is longer than 3" and I would not carry it unless I am camping or in the woods.

Here are the answers:

• Still single blade?
  [Ans] Yes, I like single blade
• Modern (tactical) or traditional?
  [Ans] Modern but not tactical i.e. the blade should be straight edge not serrated
• U.S. made or are imports acceptable?
  [Ans] preferably US made
• Do you have a preference as to blade profile (clip, spear, Wharncliffe, etc)?
  [Ans] don't understand blade profiles much but a straight blade like buck 55
• Locking blade or not?
  [Ans] locking blade
• Any preference as to handle material?

[Ans] All steel or metal

And yes, since I keep travelling to Seattle for work, it should be less than 3".

I have looked into Kershaw leek and Kershaw chive and the chive is a great little knife. My only question is, they are "spring assisted" so need to find out if they are legal to carry in WA and seattle

I am also leaning more towards the chive because of its smaller profile. I will carrying it to my office everyday and don't want the non-knife guys to freakout

Others may have opinions that differ from mine but I think Scott's recommendations are right up your alley.

Knife and weapon laws are genetically confusing because they are written by people who don't know their A** from their elbow about the subject. That said, this is what Washington State law says about spring assisted knives. (Kershaw SpeedSafe®, Buck ASAP®, etc)

A knife that contains a spring, detent, or other mechanism designed to create a bias toward closure of the blade and that requires physical exertion applied to the blade by hand, wrist, or arm to overcome the bias toward closure to assist in opening the knife is not a spring blade knife.
(spring blade knife being a switchblade or gravity knife)

So with that in mind and Assisted Opening knives being legal.....

Usually you can get the blade length, plus or minus, by subtracting an inch from the closed length of the knife.



Kershaw Scallion -- Yes, it is assisted opening. 3½" closed, it's between the Leek and the Chive. Can be had with handles in various colors of anodized aluminum. Under $50

Buck 292 Impluse -- A/O, 3¾" closed, Anodized aluminum handles, very sturdy. Various colors. Under $50

Spyderco -- Not A/O. Diligent searching will find one (used) made in USA for under $50. Very nice knife and the round thumb hole in the blade is much easier to use than a thumb stud (IMO).

CRKT -- Nice knives. Not all A/O. Most under $50 are imported.

Just as an extra FYI, you actually need at least 5
edcs.

Kershaw Scallion my first AO and probably still my favorite

I saw couple of Kershaw scallion videos and I love that knife. Now the question is, which color. I like the blue and black with Kershaw written on it... They both are strong contenders.

Around and around and around she goes. Where she stops nobody knows. It's been awhile but I don't think these are all the colors.

Me too, Scott. All I know is, that with my conceal carry permit, I can carry any knife or deadly weapon I want in the Commonwealth of Kentucky
