All About Pocket Knives

I am about to buy either a #23 Pioneer or #73 Scout. I like to carry my knives so my first inclination is to go with the Scout. I would appreciate some of you who have some experience with these two knives to talk a bit about your thoughts. I sometimes have to overcome my "I can do it" attitude. I know the Pioneer is big and heavy and the Scout is a lot smaller but I found a Pioneer that I really like from the 2007 run.
Give me your honest thoughts regarding if one should attempt to carry the Pioneer or Scout occasionally. For what it's work I work in an office so I am pretty much a khaki guy during the week.

My second questions relates to year of production. Both the Pioneer and Scout that has turned on my fire right now is from the 2007 production. My question is it okay to buy new stock from 2007 or should I buy newer production? In both cases the handle material is Stag.

I value the opinions here and thank you in advance for your response.

At 4 1/2" the Pioneer is a pretty big lump. but probably manageable in one of these.



I'm carrying the Montana Whittler at 3 1/2" and I have it in this.




In either case, the year of manufacture would not bother me. Go for it!!!

I don't see a down side. What's your concern? They don't go stale like crackers or sour like milk.

I carry the #73 Scout (below) in my pocket,with no trouble at all__ it is "my primary EDC"___the #23 Pioneer is 4 1/2 inches, lots heavier,and is much more enjoyable to carry in a belt sheath,such as the one below ( much too heavy for pocket carry---IMHO )__ you can't go wrong with the GEC Stag,from any years !!!!! It's all good !!!!!

I guess I had figured out that they don't go stale. I have read some opinions expressed that there is a rather significant difference in stag quality between the older and newer productions. I don't remember which was better and I can not put my finger on the thread. I ordered a #73 from the 2007 production. Looking forward to adding this one to my small collection. Cant go wrong with a 73 I love the 23's, but not for pocket packin'. Dont forget the Missouri Trader/Trapper (#42) for the #73 / #23 in between.

yep,42's are definitely worth a look.........

single blade 73s for the kahki days & the pioneer & missouri traders in single blades & horizontal belt sheaths on non-work days. i have found the stag thru the years to be consistently superb.--HiPower
