Edged weapon patina question fake or real

On another post I talked about replacing my damaged leather handle which I am working on. I do have a question and as a newbie and I dont have a clue. When I got the knife off of Epay of course I looked at the picture etc and for the most part the color on the blade was about 75% there - more or less. Since I decided to replace the entire handle I figured that I would go ahead and give the knife a mirror polish (for me). After I removed the greying patina I noticed that really there were lots of course grind marks going in different directions and all over the blade. I was using lapping compound so I know it wasnt me.
I know that wouldnt come from the factory and obviously it has been done by someone during the last 45 years of it's life.

My question is - is it possible or can you put on an artificial patina or coating to obscure those marks which I guess happened to me. I am not finger pointing to the seller as I have no idea how they received the blade and not my point. Just want to know are there techniques used to " faux-restore" the finishes on these or any knives. I am confident I have a 67 Camillus JPK but not as to the actual wear and tear it received (or not). When I went to the Fort Worth gun show last week I questioned a seller and told him that his KA-BAR was a fake. He told me that he preferred to call it a "reproduction". So I guess that is why I am asking about the coloring of the blades.

No idea wether or not it was done to your knife but the answer is yes you can force patina on carbon steel.

Wow you hit the nail on the head. Thanks for that forum thread. Pretty well answered my question. Mine might have been on purpose or again maybe not but at least I know how to potentially put a nice patena back on the knife.
