How can I tell if this is a newer or older model w49? On the sheath it say Coleman/Western and on the knife if says Western USA W49. What is this kind of knife mainly used for? any value?

Yes, tell us more, are you genuinely interested in knives or just fishing for free info and appraisals?

Most of my knives were given from my grandfather and have a lot of sentimental value. They are not anything it is just nice to get an idea of how common they are and their worth... Thanks for the info (If i wanted to sell them on ebay I would have posted them on there and not here)
