Knife search alert, I need your help

Gang,

I have been given an excellent assignment to research and hopefully find the worlds largest carving knife and fork. I beleive that they are in Wisconsin but obviously am not positive. They were made in the late 1800's by the Beaver Falls Cutlery Company in Pennsylvania. "Gee I wonder why I would enjoy that"

So if anyone has any information about the whereabouts I would greatly appreciate it. I have some docuementation already, but to find the real thing would be GREAT. PLease put the word out and keep me in mind. This sounds like great fun for sure.

I for one was born in WIS.
Most people there do not use computers so you will have to go knicking on doors up there. But do not go when its hunting season cuz they not home then and you mite get shot too.

Thank you all for looking for me. I haven't been able to find anything yet. I am going to try and advertise in a few Wisconsin papers in hopes of getting a hit. I will keep you informed.

I wonder if the Guinness Book of records would have something like that, or Ripleys believe it or not, worth a try. If not, then have a nice Guinness afterwards.

Hi Gang!

I have checked the record books with no luck. I have also contacted several nationally know ivory carvers in hopes of knowledge of thier whereabouts, no luck, Knife world ran a short story sometime ago looking for them, no luck. I am considering an ad in a Wis newspaper in hope that it might generate a response. Thanks for helping, keep your eyes and ears open.

Hey Pa;
Do you have any idea as to dimensions.How many tines, material, shape etc. What is largest you have seen so far. Any idea as to pattern of knife,
can you post the Beavers falls documentation or is is worthwhile to read.
What would be your guess as to size. Is it single, double shear or what other steel, is it hammer forged, is it ground or is it stamped, is it or was it a usable product or an advertising piece.

Have you any info at all or are you completely in the dark for project.
I have a 14" blade 20" overall aj jordan, I dont see how one much bigger
could be usable, this things like a small machete.

I have more info, but I think this quote will give you an idea of what it is that I am looking for. Hope it helps

"At the Centennial in Philadelphia in 1876 was exhibited the largest knife and fork in the world, manufactured by the Beaver Falls Cutlery Company," was the announcement made by that company on a small folder printed for distribution and which went on to say: "This knife is one-third larger than one made in Sheffield last year on the occasion of the Prince of Wales' visit to that place, which was the largest knife made up to that time. (The entire knife was nine feet, seven inches long, and width of the blade ten inches.)

The handles of the knife and fork were of solid ivory, each using an entire elephant's tusks. These handles, far from being plain were beautifully carved with flowers and vines .... The knife and fork were made while the Chinese were at the Cutlery.

Great stuff isn't it?

I don't know the city that it went to. I know that it was shipped from Little Valley to WIS. in the mid sixties when CAT closed. CAT used them as advertising too. The shipper has passed away, but docuementation that I have says he didn't remember where or who any ways. Any one have a suggestion for a well read newspaper in Wis. to use for advertising? Thanks gang.

A thought, could there be a tie to Washington Cut. Co. that went to Gray and Dudley that assigned to Keith Simmons hardware in Nashville. The dates dont tie up but it would have started in Milwaukee/Watertown Wis.

I bet Bernard Levine Whut Izzit in Knife World could help but it takes so long for an answer. Slip him a couple of bucks, it might speed up the process. I can not send a picture on this infernal machine, but I have an A.C. Penn four blade green bone knife with a blade that was used for the head lights of cars . A.C. Penn New York I think, was made in Pennslvania. Got any info? derf redbone.

Actually Bernard and I are friends and I spoke to him on the phone at length on this subject. He has given me ideas but none have worked out yet. A vast storehouse of information, but what I really like about him is that he will tell what he knows, but will always tell you what he doesn't know. NO BS.

I just E-MAILED 40 clubs in WIS.
Ask them to let me know of a paper to place an add and asked them if they know of this WORLD'S LARGEST KNIFE and FORK.

I all so found this and thought you mite be care full up in WIS. if you go there.

National Knife Museum has a set but can't tell if its what you are looking for.
