And revved up I am! The U.P. diesel and dummy showed up last night. Mechanical sound but cosmetically a train wreck.
Now I just need some serious clean up, prep, painting, decals and running time. I might do both in the solid dark Navy but with different decal schemes. I really like that X nose scheme.

Re: Any Train Enthusiasts Out There?
Would someone please inform me of what major railroad lines still exist or, if there are many, perhaps a rough estimate of their number. As a child I lived near the Rock Island line, which as you know was a "mighty fine line."

QS, I can start a list with-
CSX
Norfolk Southern
Union Pacific
Canadian National
Canadian Pacific
BNSF
Not including regional passenger service.

Re: Any Train Enthusiasts Out There?
I highly recommend anyone with an interest in this thread, to check out some of the several youtube videos of the L S & I railroad. Lake Superior and Ishpeming is a short line railroad in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, primarily hauling Iron Ore from the mines to the ore dock at Marquette. There is beautiful scenery here, particularly the runs filmed in snow, great old equipment.....they still use a couple of old GE U30s and the pellets are hauled in ore cars dating back to the 1930s. Loading the freighters at the dock is also quite interesting.

Re: Any Train Enthusiasts Out There?
Update to previous post.....I just read that L S & I has retired their pair of U 30s, they made their last run about a month ago. They were the last U boats still in use by any railroad, end of an era.
I'm telling you, these are some of the best train videos I have seen, check 'em out!

Here's the lastest shot of my Cumberland Yards layout with the rag-tag U.P. diesels. Hoping that the next time you see them they will be in B&O paint schemes. But between USPS and my concierge, the decals I bought have gone missing.
Hopefully just temporarily.
Yes, I'm running 3 transformers.

Your layout is getting so big that it looks like you had to resort to a drone shot for a picture to post!1967redrider wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 1:33 pm Here's the lastest shot of my Cumberland Yards layout with the rag-tag U.P. diesels. I had to go vertical for more room, Ike.
That's an old New York Central Pacemaker Freight Service to the left, AT&SF Refer box car to the right. They're from the 50's and belonged to my dad.

Has the plastic warped?
I'm currently trying to get a Marklin DRG Class 89 running. It was part of a Schering-Plough promo set, and it's a trainwreck. Guessing 1990s or later; as the body is plastic, whoile the older ones were diecast. There was no pickup shoe, and a pile of dog hair and carpet fibers inside the mechanism. I may have accidentally scraped something getting it out, as it was making a weird noise.
It's a cheap loco; so I may just shell out a few more bucks for one I KNOW is in good mechanical condition. Or just go with the Henschel shunter I've been wanting. Not much more expensive, but MUCH more powerful, and equally suited to small layouts. My only current Marklin runner is a lower-powered version for cheap sets--two axles, with only one driven. Won't pull over four cars.
I have a lower-end one with the same shell, but it's odd in that it has only two axles, and one is driven (the regular Marklin has all six wheels driven).

You're talking about the roof slope about halfway back on the diesels? Believe it or not they're made that way. Looks wonky to me too but every one I have seen looks like that. Good luck with your Marlin, I'm not familiar with it. Any pictures?

That was a hurried shot from the parking lot at work. I was getting into my truck after work and looked up and saw the yard power moving some grain cars so hurried and got a quick pic.

I'm with Ike, i vote B&O. Love dark navy colour schemes. Remember to prime it though, makes a big difference. Good luck, looking forward to seeing the finished project.1967redrider wrote: ↑Mon Feb 14, 2022 10:01 pm Well, I just found a different decal kit, might be going B&O with these two . . .
