Great picture, Scott!
Spent many a day in the piney flat woods with all the Palmettos both deer hunting and cow hunting.
Those woods appear to have been control burned, the key to keeping fresh browse for cattle and wildlife plus eliminating most chances of wildfire.
Kinda' miss those type woods but not enough to return to the rat race surrounding them.

Edit: I've noticed how spooky the wild deer are in some pictures from our place, the least little thing seems to set them off.
I'll pick out a few pictures and post later in response to this fine buck that allowed Bro. Scott to ride by.

Very nice buck, Scott. I have spent a fair amount of time in flatwoods: I will say that they are pretty close to my least favorite terrain. I had an old man tell me that there is either a rattlesnake or wasp nest under every palmetto. That may be an exaggeration, but I do take care.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
In response to the great picture Scott got of the velvet buck in the flat woods not being alarmed by his presence, I thought about several pictures I have showing how spooky the wild deer are. Not that that nice buck is not wild, but he is apparently used to people in his domain not posing a threat to him. In my experience, wild deer don't seem to be spooked by farm machinery working in their world. I've driven by lots of deer in the Florida woods that don't pay much attention to a vehicle as it continues to move. By the number of pictures that are shared on social media of does and their babies in people's back yards, it obvious the deer get used to humans and tolerate them very well.
In the woods, a deer is constantly jerking its' head up and looking around for whatever might be after it. They eat and look, constantly. Only the younger yearlings fail to demonstrate this behavior, they are just hungry and haven't learned to be cautious or at least that's the way I see it.
I've noticed several pictures in the last couple of months that demonstrate the spookiness of deer in the woods by a feeder.
Click on the picture to see more detail, rain drops, etc. The next 3 pictures tickled me watching these ol' gal's reaction to a coming rain shower. Some of y'all can relate to hearing the rain coming through the woods before it reaches your location. Treefarmer

Nice deer crop, tree.
I jumped a deer doing some trail riding, he was gone in a flash. But I did take some pictures of the countryside. These first set of pictures is from Beer Camp. I carved my initials "JK" in that tree 20 years ago.

Almost Heaven and looking East, with some rail shots. I chainsawed that Wooden Throne out of a Maple stump. It even has a shelf for your remote control.

Garry, I agree with your assessment of redrider’s great pictures!
Way too much hill climbing for these old worn out knees, reckon I’ll have to stay in the flat woods to ambush Bambi.
That “carved” chair is very unique!
Keep the pictures coming, 1967redrider.

Thanks, gentlemen. The bird's eye view of the railroad tracks gives you some perspective on the elevation. Also, you might notice Cumberland Municipal Airport (which is actually located in Wiley Ford, WV) across the way.

Looks like y’all are firing 22’s, give us a rundown if you will? Did the grandson out shoot you?

Went to my favorite campground last weekend. Very relaxing.
I actually have 25 1/2 acres within 5 miles of this campground but I cant get there with the RV.

I see bears occasionally but this is big hungry country, bears and grizzlies in particular do a lot of travelling. They don't hang around unless there's a good food source.Quick Steel wrote: ↑Thu Aug 25, 2022 11:10 am Yes, it is all God's country. Do you have any bears near you?
