That is awesome, Roger

Here’s an interesting item I saw at a flea market today. An old-time water fountain “bubbler” from a schoolhouse. Or is it a water fountain from an old-time schoolhouse?

They said it’s in working order, just needs to be connected to a drain for the overflow.

That is a first for me. I have never seen a drinking fountain like that. I started to school in 1946 and we had drinking fountains that were connected to the plumbing. I wonder if they filled it with a garden hose?

What about filling that with a bucket from an open well? That would eliminate issues for smaller children getting a drink or for that matter be helpful fo all during the school day?

My guess would be that it was filled from a well, and carried into the school by a couple of older boys. Note the handles on each side. I’d rule out the hose - if they had running water they surely wouldn’t have needed that contraption for a water fountain.

Yep, a first for me too. I started school in a one room/one teacher country school house and I don't recall what we did for water. Probably had a cistern.

As I was getting my Christmas chicken and pig out of of the ole chicken house the Friday after Thanksgiving, I spied a sack and wondered what was in it. Found a full bag that I'd forgot about.

Took these pictures this afternoon while I was on my walk. This is about as good as it gets for fall color here! Problem is it never lasts long - in a few days all those leaves will be on the ground.

Yes, that's what we call a hand of tobacco, several leaves put together then a leaf wrapped around the top, and bulked down in the old days. Not done that way anymore. Those hands are about 40 years old.
My brother in law's father past away in the early 80's and his mother knew I chewed tobacco and she gave me a big box of twist that he had hand made and she also gave me a big bag of these hands that he was aging to be put into twists.

Very nice pics, Ken. It has only been 5 or 6 weeks since we had colors like that here, but it seems like much longer than that.

Joe it's been many years since anyone I know of tied their tobacco in "hands". I'd guess for the last thirty years or more, they've pressed the stripped tobacco leaves into bales. Around here years ago every farm had a tobacco crop. Now very few tobacco producers remain.

A friend recently graduated from her basictraining up in Chiago and as we had mailed her during that time she presented me with this challenge coin. I feel honored to have it.

Santa was at James Wood Chevrolet getting his sleigh

serviced before the big night. He wouldn't tell me what anyone was getting for Christmas.
