Wow, Cudgee, that looks like a pretty big fire. Hope everyone was ok. We had a big grass fire near here in Wise county today. They had to fly some planes over to drop retardant.
Our new place had a raised bed a little ways down the ridge behind our house. I weed-whacked it this summer to get it partially cleared. Then last week I bought a little used tiller and tilled it up. In the next couple of weeks I will till in a few sacks of some garden soil and cow manure. I plan to plant some tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and cantaloupe next month. Might even try to find some space for some asparagus. I'll have to rig a flexible pipe down the hill / through the woods from behind my shop for irrigation.
Looking forward to some home grown tomatoes! Hopefully the birds and deer won't eat them all.

Looks like the perfect size! Deer can sure wreak havoc on a garden, between them and Squirrels we may as well forget having much Sweet Corn. During a dry Summer the Squirrels will also ruin a few tomatoes just for the moisture. Do you have any Squirrels in your neighborhood?

We have a lot of squirrels. My wife likes birds, and has several bird feeders (which the squirrels raid), and we also have a deer feeder, and she also throws a scoop of bird feed over the back fence every morning. The crows caw at her impatiently if she is late. I can usually see anywhere from 3 to 10 squirrels and sometimes 50 or so dove behind my house at any given time.

Lots of cardinals, a few blue jays, chickadees, Juncos, wrens, flycatchers, etc
As a result of all the squirrels, we also have coyotes and fox that frequent the back of our place. She has created quite the food chain in our backyard.

Those are a couple of very interesting photos, Mike. Catching that possum in the tree is definitely eye-catcching.

This thread needed a reboot.

Friend sent me a copy of this, was a fire in their district a couple of weeks ago when we had some hot, but really humid weather. Makes you realise how scary a bush fire can be.

Wow!!!

That's a very cool picture!

Look at those colors, the drama in the sky, the trees green & grey, ect.

Amazing picture!

Thanks guys. I still can't over this phone - has a 50x zoom. It takes really cool pictures of the moon, but I have to brace on something - in this case the bricks on the side of the house - to keep it focused without shaking.
My wife was letting the dogs out last night before bedtime, and they started barking, and she noticed the possum. He was getting into one of her bird feeders. After the dogs came back in, I went back out with a flashlight and snapped a pic of him. He didn't seem to be very bothered.

The tree is a cedar elm, and the little bit of green is some mistletoe.

My wife and I went out last Sunday to our favourite pie shop.
From time to time we observed one and then two small wrens, close by.
I tried to get closer, to take some photos.
This became quite harder that I thought, they would no stay still.
Time and time I tried, I was adjusting the camera all the time.
I was just thinking I was wasting time, when their dad arrived to fed them.Ken

Latest project. My trailer was looking pretty sad, with the wood getting a little crispy and the metal getting rusty. Removed the old wood yesterday. The self-tapping screws were a little stubborn, but some PB Blaster and vise grips got them out with only a few breaking off. I will try to get it power washed this afternoon, and then wire-brushed with the angle grinder this week. I have some black Rustoleum oil based paint, and am going to try to use an old (brand new) Wagner power painter I have had for 20 years but never taken out of the box.

Going to coat the pressure-treated lumber top and bottom with water sealer before installation. We'll see how it goes.

I was driving past Shawneetown, Il yesterday, and made a brief stop to check out the old bank which I had not seen for a number of years. Sadly, it looks to be quite neglected. Some background info........Shawneetown became Illinois' first European settlement in the mid 1700's. In the years after the Revolutionary War, Shawneetown was an important outpost and the headquarters for the Northwest Territory. The first bank in Illinois was chartered there in 1816, operating out of a log house. In 1839 the cornerstone was laid for a more permanent bank building. That building was brick with a limestone facade and impressive columns. It is the oldest bank building in the state of Illinois. Old Shawneetown was devastated by the great Ohio River flood of 1937 and the town was mostly destroyed. Residents and businesses fled to higher ground. The bank, a bar, and a handful of homes is all that remains of the old town. The bank is listed on the NRHP. I took a picture yesterday from street level. The 2nd picture is one I downloaded from the 1937 flood, note the water level appears to be well up the doors, near the transom.
