No offense, but I don't consider comedic movies as "Westerns", Westerns.

Blazing Saddles was funny, but Mel Brooks just went too far with it.

I liked the Support Your Local Sheriff movies, but I prefer serious Westerns.

There are still some good Westerns being made. Robert Duvall has done some, Open Range was great, as is one of his latest, Broken Trail. I haven't seen Wild Horses or A Night in Old Mexico, but I suspect they are good, 'cause he's in them.

Although not a Western, you should all see him in Get Low.

John Wayne's The Searchers is probably the best Western ever made.

Shane is another favorite of mine.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is a fabulous movie, Eastwood's Best, in my opinion.

"Makes my heart soar like a hawk"

Unforgiven is dark, but a great movie.

Quigley Down Under and all the Sackett movies are good.

I even liked Cowboys and Aliens.

My favorite line from any movie ever, of any genre, was spoken firstly by Richard Boone, then amplified by John Wayne in Big Jake:

"Anything goes wrong, Anything at all. My fault. Your fault. Nobody's fault. It don't matter. I'm gonna blow your head off".

I know Jerry is going to Google that and show that I've misquoted it, but that's how I remember it. ::tu::

I have read through the Lonesome Dove book series two or three times. Most of Gus and Cap'n Calls adventures are fictionalized accounts of actual events in Texas history. I rank them among the best books I have ever read as well.
Me too Unk.

I like a lot of westerns mentioned, but none has the amount of quotable lines ,to me , as Lonesome Dove( won the Pulitzer Prize for literature).

"Life is cheap here on the Illeano (sp??)" Monkey John
"And it's apt to get cheaper" Blue Duck

Woodrow said I expect she would have died wherever she was at.

Jerry,

You should read the book,if you can't get into the mini-series.

I agree ,about anything Duvall does,he does well.

Try reading Gone to Texas (coupled with The Outlaw Josey Wales) - my copy had both books under one cover - great read - the movie was really based on Gone To Texas, but used the title from the second book to name the movie. OH

The author , Forrest Carter, supposedly was a speech writer for George Wallace. He taught some classes at Hardin Simmons, I believe it was, which is a Baptist University in my home town of Abilene, Texas.
He also wrote a great little book, The Education of Little Tree. It is a very quick read and well worth the time. Interestingly, the name of the family in this book is also named Wales. It was made into a movie but it didn't seem to get much traction.
It was nominated for Oprah's Book Club or whatever she calls it but she turned thumbs down on it quickly, presumably because of the George Wallace connection.

I love Lonesome Dove. Tommy Lee Jones is one of my favorite actors as is Robert Duval.

Gum about Newt, "The only chance that boy's got at an education is listening to me talk."

Gus to Call, "I'm glad I ain't scared to be lazy."

Gus, "I'd like the chance to shoot at an educated once in my life."

Went with the wife and some friends last night to see The Revenant. Very powerful but graphic movie, not for the faint hearted! (not for children either!) My wife couldn't watch much of it (covered her eyes ). DeCaprio does a great job as the lead character Hugh Glass. He's on screen most of the film but has little dialog, since much of the time he's alone in the frozen wilderness. No voice-over narrative either so as an actor he has to convey what's going on to the audience through his actions and facial expressions. Tom Hardy is also great as the villain Fitzgerald - move over Bruce Dern! I wouldn't call it a traditional Western. More mountain man like Jeramiah Johnson but more violent, without any humor.

Heads up for all you John Wayne fans!

The Quite Man is now on Netflix. I'm watching it now. Also, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Longest Day.

That may be a bit off topic, but I thought I'd share it with y'all.

I joined Facebook back in 2009, and one of the first things my sister sent was a request to list your 15 favorite movies. Here is my list from 2009. Not sure I would change any of them 6 or 7 years later:

1. Saving Private Ryan
2. The Godfather I
3. The Godfather II
4. The Deer Hunter
6. Gladiator (Strength and Honor!)
7. The Quiet Man (w/ John Wayne)
8. Unforgiven (w/ Clint Eastwood) ("Deserves got nothing to do with it")
9. Forrest Gump
10. The Cowboys (w/ John Wayne)
11. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
12. Young Frankenstein
13. The Outlaw Josey Wales ("Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy")
14. The Patriot (w/ Mel Gibson)
15. The Last of the Mohicans (w/ Daniel Day Lewis)

I didn't include Lonesome Dove, as it is a mini-series "made for TV" show, and not a traditional movie. But I consider it my favorite "made for TV" type show.

I agree Lonesmome Dove is the best TV mini-series. In fact I'd say it's the best of any genre, not just Westerns. My choice for next best is The Good Old Boys, based on the novel of the same name written by Elmer Kelton. For any not familiar with it, the cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Sissy Spacek, Sam Shepard, Francis McDermond, Wifred Brimley, and a very young Matt Damon. Great story, lots of humor and as best I recall not a shot fired.
Kelton said the characters were based on real-life cowboys he knew while growing up on a Texas ranch, and stories he heard from them.

Kelton was a West Texan from San Angelo. He worked on the San Angelo Standard Times and was a prolific author. Lots of good ol' boy stories. I liked his The Time It Never Rained since it was about the drought of the 1950s when I was growing up in the middle of it.

Ken,
Nice collection of books. I had to try twice to read the book to which I referred, The Time It Never Rained. First time I just couldn't get into it. Went back about a year later and read it through with no hang-ups.

Hope she enjoys them Tommy. Kelton's formula has been to take a little known actual historical event and write a novel using that as its theme. IMHO his best were some of his earlier works such as The Day the Cowboys Quit, The Wolf and the Buffalo, and The Good Old Boys. As one critic said, Kelton doesn't write Westerns, he writes novels set in the West. In most of his books there's not a shot fired.

Most of the great westerns have been mentioned on this thread so just a few comments. I enjoyed "The Wild Bunch." Thought the walk down the street to the final fight was classic. It introduced a level of violence not previously seen in westerns.

Wayne gave one of his best acting performances in "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon." Very convincing as a cavalry Cpt. near retirement. I recall reading long ago that Wayne himself considered it his best work.

I was a kid at the time, but always enjoyed the Randolph Scott westerns.

Of the countless movies about Jesse James I thought the best was "The Long Riders."
