Found this fairly uncommon critter on a fence gatepost. When I closed the gate it fell onto the ground, so I scooped it up with a leaf - not about to touch it! ::woot::

Ken
We have a lot of those here. They are poisonous. 😑
John πŸŽ…
They’re not common here, at least not in this part of Texas, but some years there are more than others. This is the first one I’ve seen recently. And yes, they are poisonous and very painful if one touches you.

An asp. The caterpillar form of some moth I've forgotten the name of.

I don't want no part of those! We used to call them asp's as well.

We had a beautiful sunset here in North Texas tonight. I took these three pics from the same vantage point with three different zoom settings on my phone.

From my late afternoon walk........for many reasons, winter is my favorite time of year to get out in the woods, one reason being the Sycamores are so striking.

I enjoy your winter photos very much. Another positive for me is that whatever birds are available are more easily seen.

It's the larval (caterpillar) form of the Southern Flannel Moth. Known as a puss caterpillar, aka asp. Innocent cuddly looking little critter with thousands of poisonous spines that inflict terrible burning pain if you just touch it, or it touches you, in any way.

Mike those are great pictures. We had the same beautiful sunset here. Unfortunately we were busy fighting a pasture fire in the windy conditions at the time the sun was setting. Before all was done 5 different towns sent fire department tanker trucks here. Started in at least two or possibly three different places on the neighbor's ranch (they think it was arson). Probably burned around a hundred acres but fortunately was extinguished before any property damage and no one was hurt. It got within about 200 ft of the creek that runs between our place and the neighbor's. Makes you realize how little you could do with just 200 ft of garden hose when the wind is blowing 20-30 mph! ::woot::

Great foggy morn picture, Ken, I like the tractor and round bales on the horizon with the trees barely visible in background.

Thanks Ike.

I meant to ask, your picture of the tree with the red berries looks like what we call possumhaw holly here. What is it?

Nah, I wish it was something as innocent as Possumhaw, we do have that here but their berries are long gone for the year. This is an invasive honeysuckle and it is taking over in many areas of the Midwest. If you don't have it in Texas, you are lucky. I rarely see it in a mature woods but it flourishes in open areas and scrubby patches.

Ike that picture with the tree reflection in the water is just perfect. What a shot . ::tu:: ::tu::
Also like walking out in winter when the sun is out the colors at times are very vibrant it seems .
Thanks for sharing your outdoors with us . It’s neat seeing stuff from where everybody lives.

Thank you guys. The local news weatherman did a story on the beautiful sunset, and said the station had been inundated with pics of it.

Ken, glad you guys were able to get the fire(s) out. They can spread quickly in this North Texas wind. And nice pic!

Nice pics, Ike!
