Hay cutting time again. Got a big surprise when the left front wheel of the tractor sunk into a hole, where there has never been a hole before!

The wheel and tire was completely in and the only thing preventing it from going in further was the axle. Had to use the front end loader on another tractor to lift it out of the hole.
It appears there was an old well, cistern, outhouse, cellar or ? that had years ago been covered over with dirt, and has now caved in under the tractor’s weight.

There is about 3 feet of dirt, under which can be seen some old wooden boards. Below that is a layer of what looks like flat limestone rocks stacked a few feet thick, and under that can be seen a smooth limestone wall. Can’t see into it enough to tell how big the hole is. There’s no water in the bottom that I can tell. As it is the existing hole is not large enough to get down into it - don’t think I want to anyway.

A lot of old wood covered wells scattered around. But a mystery still.

Bet that was a surprise Ken, just glad you weren't hurt. Hope the tractor is okay.
That land we are building on has been cut and baled for years, but I'm still wondering what I might find when I start to develop the
ground around the buildings and the driveway. The rest of the property I will probably let the same guy continue to cut it.

That is a scruffy band of workers!
I remember when my son paid $20k for a dog.
My son could put about 10 or 15 sheep on a truck - one would turn around and then there was 8 or 9.
The dog quickly let the sheep know, there was no turning around - and pushed another 500 on the truck.

A good working dog is worth a fortune. And makes a loyal friend.
Full moon tonight.

Thought I might share some pic's I took the other day out at the property we're building on.
The current gate and after all the construction we'll build a nicer one. The next day we had a guy come out and cut our property and my sons so it looks much different now.
The 2 buildings currently being used for some storage. I still need to get ramps. The first one I think will be my work shop and storage building. The second one will be my office and knife museum.
This is my son's house on the adjacent property. That lower section is a new addition he's adding. The building to the far right is his pump house, not an "out house," but the blue one in the middle is a porta potty that his builder brought in.
Here is the family pump across the road....just kidding, but there are 2 of them across the road.
This is our neighbor that the land was purchased from.
This will be our front porch view out to the west.

John you're right it can be windy. It sets up on a rise in that area and on a clear day you can see the Decatur Court House 14 miles away because it sets on the highest elevation in the area.

Nice pictures, Phil, thanks for posting. Tom appears to be ignoring you, I think he was distracted by your wife!

Phil: The Blue Ridge...thanks for the memories. I had occasion to drive the Blue Ridge one late afternoon which dissolved into a spectacular sunset as I descended into the valley. Have never forgotten that sight.

Tom did apparently have an eye for the ladies.
