I went to the flea market this morning with a friend of mine. Didn't find much of anything that I wanted to buy but I did get this 8ot for twelve bucks. It's a little ugly, but the blades are full, tight and snappy so I figured why not.

When you can get an American made Old Timer in good condition for $12, I would guess why not!

Great little old timer in my opinion , I looked at a 34 that wasn't as good as yours and he wouldn't come lower than 15. I found these at the little local flea mkt.

IH, That's an interesting letter opener you have there...I wouldn't mind seeing a little more of it.

It's a John Watts with early plastic scales and advertising for an insurance company. It also has their Plati noid stamp on the letter opener. John Watts made a lot of advertisers and all metal knives. The slow death of the company is a rather interesting story.

The scout is a L,F&C universal made in usa. Could be a fake Toad sticker is a lmperial usa.

The Richards were coming thick and fast, joined by a little round Ambassador. That darn Ambassador has been popping up at every antique and collectable show for the past year. It’s been screaming at me, in fact. The very nice older couple that had it told me that they are getting out of shows. A lot of their stuff had dropped like a rock, actually. This knife finally came down to “oh, alright! C’mon...”

I thought I was going to search for years to get my Mountie fixed, but there he was, second table in! Yay! Plus, another big folder to replace my suspicious one. It’s getting darker by the minute and has been banished to a shelf by itself. Oh, and another plaid and what I was told was an abilone penknife. Could be, it feels pretty high end for a Richards and I think the linings are nickle.

Ann:It looks like it may be abalone chips suspended in clear celluloid.I have a couple of knives with similar handles. As for it being high end;I bought an engine turned metal handled Richards awhile back that was very nice.I have a Thomas Turner that is nearly identical except for size.

Here is today's finds(my first in quite awhile): A Schrade single blade switch with unusual celluloid handles(and a broken spring) for $5. And a Victorinox metal handled mini with an unusual logo that looks like a fist clenching something for 50 cents.

I have a Richards with a very heavy aluminum handle that may not be original. Does yours look like this?

Oh, do I have a good time at the collectors swap in New Westminster! It’s put on by the Fraser Valley Antiques and Collectables Club, twice a year at the Queens Park Arena. The big fixed is a William Rogers ‘I Cut My Way’.
Next to it are the Richards. They are the small plaid, celluloid ‘bone’, blue and green celluloid and ‘bone’ fishknife. Crossways at the top is an IXL that’s about to be an EDC! Below it, the odd little object is a sort of scalpel that drops out of the brass handle using a mechanism like a ballpoint pen. Even odder, it was made by the Eagle Pencil Co. Next to it, we have a Remington three blade. The bright silver, probably nickel, is a bit of a mystery. I’m going to post it’s tang stamp on another thread. I want to see if I’m right. The little ones are nameless but fully functional and I just love ‘em!
The sword seems to be a Bangkung from the Philippines. The horse hoof pommel would make it probably post WW2. I paid a very low price for it and it’s my first sword. I’m pretty happy with it.

That is a great haul!!! I'm leaving for a road trip in the morning looking for Flea markets and antique stores that I haven't been to yet. I sure hope when I get back that my new purchases are like yours!

An old skinner, unmarked. my friend Gordon says it's garage made, but it has a poured pewter end cap so I'm not so sure.

Bruce, I have seen exactly the same skiner, marked Friedrich Herder Solingen.

It isn't a skinner, it is a lead knife for working stained glass. That is probably the most common pattern, still produced and widely available from Herder. The heavy pommel is for tapping the lead into place. The curvature in the blade is so you can rock the knife through the lead strips.

A friend of a friend called me and asked if I would look over a bunch of knives he has planned to sell in an estate sale to see if his prices were OK, and that I could have first shot at them. he had 4 tackle boxes full. I upped his prices on about a dozen. On several he had $1 on $30 to $40 knives. When I got done I set aside these 5 that I was interested in. He gave me the Sheffield Cambridge Works horn handled jack, the Marshall Wells Bowie hunter and the Balloon ebony Ulster Knife Co. jack and the Taylor compass for helping him with pricing, and sold me the J A Henckels Premium Stock Knife with massive stag and the early Utica hawk bill for $45. It was a fun afternoon. Sorry about the crappy picture.___Dave
