I probably should not buy knives that I don't know anything about... I'm a sucker for (what I think are) old knives in good condition.

Aside from the etching on the blade, there are no markings whatsoever on this knife. I (want to ) believe that this is an Ulster made knife. Do you think it was made by Ulster? Any thoughts on to whom the initials "AFB" might be referencing? I don't believe Albert Baer's middle initial was "F".

I would be grateful for any insight that can be provided.

Beautiful knife , I have the same knife but etched craftsman on the master blade .
My guess would be ulster knife company as well .

I wonder if "A.F.B." might be the initials of the Sears buyer for the Craftsman line of knives ?
About 10 ? years ago Michael Little posted a lot of information in the B.F. Schrade forum about Craftsman knives and i think he names the Sears buyer. Sears was the most important, biggest customer that both Schrade & Ulster had.
Both the above knives are spectacular ! As a former Craftsman collector i am very drawn to this stag sleeveboard Whittler.

Ulster Knife Co. Pruner

Both of the whittlers are stunning and the pruner is very nice also, nice bone that shows years of honest use.

Picked up this utility knife that I found interesting in that it has a clip main and a Phillips screwdriver, it never had a bail and is a fairly compact package. I wonder if it was made with spare parts from the 10th Mountain Division knives or was it another version military issue knife.

Very recently, this became the latest pocket knife to join my collection. It is an ULSTER, single blade, 3 tool pocket knife. It joins my three STEVENSON 45's, a CAMILLUS 1949, a CAMILLUS 1957, two CAMILLUS 1958's, three CAMILLUS 1959's, a CAMILLUS 1960 and a SCHRADE 1982. All these MIL-K pattern pocket knives have been previously posted. It is in GOOD+ 'condition and it needed a little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

Here is an interesting Ulster item I found yesterday.

There was a Prince Albert tobacco offer that only listed one knife choice.

This is the insert inside a PA can that didn't have the "knife offer" advertisement on the outside of the can......

Maybe this was an early version of the knife offer before there was 3 offered??????

Here is a snip from an article I found that was written by Dennis Ellingsen.

It appears that the knives were not all available at the same time......


The whittler is the 58 OT
The camp knife is the 114 OT
The Barlow is the 10 OT

SO..... the 58 OT was available first between 1961 and 1966.
Then the others came along in 1964.....
Maybe that is why the first inserts listed only one knife....

All these years I've been ignoring the PA cans without the knife offer.
Now I will have to open all the plain ones just to see if there is a knife offer inside.

I have seen some worse than yours but I have also seen some that look mint.

Yep. I've been cheap, Mike. I've passed on a few that were mint, but they wanted $30.00 plus for them. i just couldn't pull the trigger!

I found a bunch of the cans in a junk store a few years back, most were like new. I sold and gifted all but two. There were no papers with the cans, the paper’s were harder for me to find. Keep looking a nice one will show up. $30 seems like a bunch to me for the can Harold
